After its mammoth success in India and great performance in countries like USA and Japan, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is now set to release in China. After the success of Indian films like Dangal, Secret Superstar and Hindi Medium, many trade pundits predict high collections from Director S.S.Rajamouli’s magnum opus.
The sequel of 2015’s blockbuster hit Baahubali: The Beginning, Baahubali 2 broke all sorts of records when it was released. With Indian films gaining popularity in Oriental countries over the past few years, it’s not hard to see why expectations are so high for Baahubali 2. In fact it’s had a great run Japan, lasting for over 15 weeks and earning over $13 million.
However, films like Dangal, Secret Superstar and the like are emotionally driven films, unlike the Baahubali franchise which is a period drama. China has recently witnessed a huge drop in interest when it comes to films that heavily rely on CG, despite their extravagance. This has a big blow to Hollywood films in particular, for whom China is a huge market. Even the 2015 prequel shocked us, when it only managed to collect a modest $1.12 million, which pales in comparison to it global sum.
In addition, Baahubali 2 will also face competition at the China from many Hollywood big names. With films like Avengers: Infinity War, A Quiet Place, and Solo: A Star Wars Story releasing on 11 May, 18 May and 25 May, the film’s collected might be heavily affected. However, with some positive reviews and word of mouth, it could soon be on the path to success in the Middle Kingdom.
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion releases in China on May 4. Directed by S.S. Rajamouli and starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia, “Baahubali 2” was released in April last year in India and many major territories.
