Well, from times immemorial we have seen young actresses being wooed by older actors in Bollywood films. It was quite natural for 40 year-old actors to play college-going romeos in films but it seems there has been a shift. Recently we saw, a young gun like Varun Dhawan taking up a film where he plays a 40-year-old father. Interestingly, some of the top lister actors too are now taking up films which have them playing characters of their own age. This is certainly a good change and it is worth appreciating that the actors are no longer hesitant about ageing on screen. Ageing is natural and while a 50-something pulling off a role of an adolescent does require sharp acting skills, for the audiences, it will be a breath of fresh to see actors actually look their age.
Shah Rukh Khan:
Just when we thought we were tired of watching Shah Rukh Khan play a early twenties role, without any hesitation, the actor was seen playing a 40 year old in his hit film Chennai Express where he romanced Deepika Padukone who is in her late twenties. The role was perfect as he seamlessly fit the bill and well, thus the film too became quite a success.
Akshay Kumar:
It seems as though following Shah Rukh’s footsteps, his contemporaries too are now taking roles portraying their own age. We recently saw the first look of Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film ‘Airlift‘ where he is seen sporting a salt and pepper look . He plays a busineessman in the film and his stylized suited up look for the film shows that he will be playing someone who is in their 40s.
Aamir Khan:
We saw him look like a perfect college kid in 3 Idiots and a surprisingly fit alien in his recent film PK but interestingly, Aamir’s upcoming venture Dangal will have him sport a comparatively older look as he plays wrestler Mahavir Phogat, who has two daughters and will be seen as an encouraging father in the film. With this film, Aamir too will play someone who is in their 40s.
Salman Khan:
Well, the Dabangg Salman Khan may be the ultimate bachelor of Bollywood and while he would still be hooted at when he romances 20 something actresses in Bollywood films, we hear the actor will now play a 40 year old boxer in Sultan. Well, if Aamir, Akshay and SRK can do it, why can’t Salman right? We have just learnt, that his role in Sultan will require him to change a lot, not only his look but also his physique. It will surely be interesting to see Salman don a grey look in this film.
