The Singing maestro and soulful music director, A.R Rahman, has clearly chosen side in the Royalty war and he supports the singers’ bandwagon. It wasn’t long ago when; Abhay Deol sported his black eye, in his open protest against the T-Series, in the light of the Royalty Wars.
The Royalty wars have been long embedded in the music industry and with open protest against music giants, a league of Bollywood Singers have line up. A.R. Rahman chose to say “Personally, it pains me to see someone who has composed great songs get so little in return for his/ her work. Often these talented people don’t even have enough money to change the curtains or to get petrol for their car — this is unacceptable. Even if a person has composed just one song, he / she should be entitled to a royalty amount for it. It needn’t be a big sum, but it should let musicians live with some dignity”.
He further added “I’d say that it’s a good thing that a law protecting musicians’ rights has been passed- we needed a law in favor of musicians and artists. Of course, it will be difficult for the whole system to change drastically but I think people will eventually find common ground”.
Whereas the ace-musician went tight-lipped when asked whether or not he has signed away his royalty for his compositions for Highway, which is being backed-up by music giant T-Series, Rahman simply said, “I don’t want to go into all that”.
It was T-Series only, who relinquished the music rights of One By Two starring Abhay Deol, which led to the whole bickering between the Giants and the composers.
Wondering about the outcome of the spat, we are vying that Music wins in the end and Justice prevails. What is likely to be the outcome? We are likely to see in the coming days.
