Join UsOn 1st July 1994, Mohra was released. Starring Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Naseeruddin Shah and Raveena Tandon the movie became a huge blockbuster hit.
Today, as it completes 25 years, let us go on a trivia journey of nostalgia to relive the movie and its romance.
Hit trio; Akshay, Suniel and Paresh Rawal were a hit trio who went on to act together in many movies such as the successful Hera Pheri comic movie franchise ( Hera Pheri and Phir Hera Pheri). Interestingly Hera Pheri 3 has been announced by filmmaker Indra Kumar. Akshay and Suniel too acted in many hit movies together such as Aan, Dhadkan, Waqt hamara Hai, Sapoot and De dana dan.
Hit pair; Akshay and Raveena were magic together. They had the super hit song “tu cheez badi hai mast mast” which led Raveena to be dubbed as the “mast mast” girl. “Tip tip barsa paani” is one of the top rain songs and a remix version is being picturised on Akshay and Katrina in the forthcoming Rohit Shetty action thriller Sooryavanshi. Priyanka Chopra has also said this is one of her favourite songs.
Akshay-Raveena also had a romantic duet “Subah se le kar shaam tak” in the movie. Some other Akshay-Raveena hit movies were Khiladiyon ka khilari, Keemat and Main khilari tu anari. Recently in an interview Akshay said that working with Raveena was an honour for him and Tip tip barsa paani was one of his favorite songs.
The song Tu cheez badi hai mast mast was shot in Mumbai and it was a very hot April. Raveena had been shooting at Manali for the previous 10 days and the temperature difference led to her fainting. However after just a 30 minute rest she completed the shoot. The song “Tip tip barsa paani” too made Raveena ill as the tanker water was icy cold. Raveena was running 102 degrees fever and everyone had different medicines to offer such as Akshay Kumar with ginger-lemon tea and Rajiv Rai with rum shots.

Interestingly, Raveena was not the 1st choice for Mohra. Sridevi was considered but was busy with Chandramukhi Divya Bharati was selected and had started shooting. But her sudden death let to search for a replacement. Reportedly, Kajol was considered as well and so was Aishwarya Rai who was busy with Miss Universe commitments and then it was Raveena who finally got the role. Ajay Devgn was also supposed to do the role which went to Suniel Shetty.
Unusual Villain; Naseeruddin Shah is the main villain in this movie. His being villain is only revealed towards the end of the movie and he then states how he was using Suniel Shetty as a “Mohra” or pawn. Gulshan Grover and Sadashiv Amrapurkar also play villain roles in this movie. There was a second version of Tu cheez badi hai mast mast which was “Main cheez badi hoon mast mast” which had Raveena dancing to Naseer ji. He was very uncomfortable and said “Kya kya kara rahe ho Rajeev mujhse“. Raveena has said in between shoots she and Naseer ji would discuss world affairs.
