The seventh instalment of the Harry Potter franchise – Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows (Part I) – drew US $125 million in its opening weekend, making it the biggest opening in the franchise history. The previous best, Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, earned $102.7 million in 2005. This was the sixth all-time best initial, behind The Dark Knight ($158.4 million), Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million), The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142.8 million), Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($135.6 million) and Iron Man 2 ($128.1 million).
The previous two weekends’ top film, Megamind, slipped to the second spot with a gross of $16 million. It’s total for 17 days up to $109.3 million.
Twentieth Century Fox’s Unstoppable also fell one place. At no. 3 in its second weekend, it collected $13 million to take its 10-day total to $42 million.
Warner Bros.’ Due Date also dropped one spot. Collecting $8.9 million in its third weekend, it took its 17-day total to $72.4 million.
A new film – The Next Three Days – rounded off the Top 5 chart. The Lionsgate film collected $6.5 million in its debut weekend.
