Star Cast: Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Sathish, Prabhu, Subbu Panchu Arunachalam, Sayaji Shinde
Director: AR Murugadoss
What’s Good: The social plot and action.
What’s Bad: Interlinking and slow 1st half!
Loo break: Makes you end the break soon as it’s the time for story take-off!
Watch or Not?: Though it’s not a typical ‘The Vijay’ film but, it has proved as a treat to all the Vijay fans. Go watch it!
The movie revolved around a social activist Jeevanantham (Vijay), an M.Sc Hydrology, who is attempting to save the farmers land by introducing water resourcing land in their village, but ends up with 7 farmers who lose their lives of farming.
Vijay is in a dual role as Kathiresan a prisoner and Jeevanantham a communist and social activist. Kathiresan and his friend (Satish) only believe in making a fast buck while Jeevanantham is fighting for a group of villagers in a remote village whose agricultural land is being illegally taken over by a Multi-national Soft Drinks Company owner, a corporate (Neil Nitin Mukesh). When Kathiresan lands Chennai with Satish, he somehow meets Jeevanantham. Then is when he decides to swipe his identity with Jeevanantham and joins the hands of the old men from an old age home being managed by Jeevanantham. And the activist lands in jail for being identical with Kathiresan. Being fussy about money, Kathiresan makes several attempts to grab some money to fly Bangkok but, fails in it for several reasons.
Kaththi Review: Script Analysis
The first initial 45 minutes of the film faded with boredom and annoyed as you couldn’t find any interesting part, neither can you point any interlinking among the two people who swipe their characters for their own reasons. The plot is unclear. It makes you wait for the loo break to grab some free air of it.
Songs are the most disturbing ones in the film as the timing and the lyrics doesn’t match up to the movie anywhere. They are wrongly and unnecessarily placed, which don’t go with the flow of the film.
Dialogues for Vijay are as per his standards. Though not initially, but lately it does a justice to the movie title “Kaththi”.
Somewhere the script was weak but, post intermission, a sudden take-off was witnessed which grabbed all the audience to expect more from their Thalapathy. Needful messages were delivered. and the way of delivery was commendable. The farmers protests, suicide to grab the media attention so that they can find some chance to address their serious concerns to the masses who act as if they don’t care a damn about a farmer. Land grabbing, water scarcity in remote villages was always a major concern since a long time.
Kaththi Review: Star Performances
Vijay’s identical star performance is highly appreciated. Though lately, but Vijay assured to deliver an entertaining top class performance. Once again, Thalapathy raised the standard by his rough and tough action package.
Neil Nitin Mukesh deserves a special mention as his negativity worked well in this movie. The star businessman did quite an interesting work in negative role.
Samantha has to be well appreciated, as her smile acted as an eye-candy in the movie. I am sure that people will start adoring her more after observing her cute and charming smile.
Kaththi Review: Direction, Editing and Screenplay
Muragadoss proved it that being criminal minded is also beneficial at times. Katheresan’s criminal mind made wonders in the movie which led to the corporate failure. He used the identical twin characters very wisely as it was difficult to spot the difference unless it was mention by a third person. But there do exist some errors in the direction in the first half, as it wasn’t only slow, but was also a package of boredom, unless they bought a social flavor to it.
Two things are still unclear, what crime did Katheresan commit for being in prison for this long time.
Did Kolkata police try to spot the reason for his long stay in Chennai? Didn’t the Kolkata police notice Katheresan fighting this long for the poor farmers? Did they mention this to the higher authorities to make an early release of Katheresan?
Kaththi Review: The Last Word
Kaththi worked like a tonic. Picks up slowly, but delivered a power packed performance. Recommended to you if you truly expect an action entertainer performance. It’s actually a one time show. But you can definitely manage yourself to sit for 3 hours with a popcorn and yes tissues as well mainly at the second half. I would give it a 2 and half stars.
Kaththi releases on 22nd October, 2014.
