Netflix is all set to rock and roll with its next release coming up this month and it’s a dance film Work It. Interestingly, an Indian girl, Indiana Mehta, has bagged an important role in the film. The 29-year-old actor will be sharing screen space with Sabrina Carpenter and Liza Koshy in the film.
Work It is a coming-of-age drama-comedy surrounding the dancing world and is slated to release on August 7th, 2020 on the popular streaming platform Netflix. The film has an alluring cast and dancer-performer Indiana Mehra will be part of it. This film marks as her Hollywood debut. Indiana Mehta has also played a small role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil which was released in 2016.
Mehta has opened up about how she grabbed the chance to feature in the film. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the young performer revealed how she showed off her Jazz, bhangra, and Garba moves in the audition. The role was later changed to that of an Indian girl.
Mehta, during an interview with the publication, said, “Initially at the audition, I submitted a dance video for an ensemble in a dance team. Post video round, I was invited for an in-person choreography round under choreographer Aakomon Jones, director Laura Terruso and the producer. I was extremely nervous as I had researched the choreographer and his work (Pitch Perfect, Black Panther, Oscars) and thought to myself that he certainly expects a really good standard of hip hop. I told myself to just go in and dance your best.”
The Indian born performer said that she danced Bollywood to a Chris Brown song. She broke out into jazz-funk, bhangra and finished with Garba. The entire panel and fellow auditioners gave a standing ovation for Mehta. Impressed by her performance and cracking a few other series of round, she was selected for the role of an Indian girl in the film.
Mehta also spoke about her character in the film. She said that her character’s name is Priya, a high school student who is good at studies, Indian dancing, hip hop, skating, and Bollywood dancing. “She is going through the whole millennial phase and loves being on her phone and capturing all moments. She has very blunt and sassy humour. I am grateful that I got to represent my culture and dance in its true form in the film,” she added.
