Britney Spears is making a legal move against the constraints of her conservatorship. She has also asked the court to not allow her father, Jamie Spears, to continue as a conservator. Since her infamous public breakdowns more than a decade ago, the pop singer has lived under a court-approved conservatorship. This complex legal arrangement allows a court-appointed guardian to oversee her personal well-being and finances.
On Tuesday, Britney asked a court to keep her father from reasserting the broad control over her life and career. In the filing, Britney’s lawyer, Samuel D. Ingham, says he has consulted her and believes the entire conservatorship should be changed to reflect her current lifestyle and condition.
As per the New York Times, Ingham wrote in the filing that Britney Spears has decided that she is “strongly opposed” to having her father return as a conservator of her person or her estate. The filing read, “Without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, Britney would like Ms Montgomery’s appointment as conservator of her person to be made permanent.”
The documents also said that she “strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed. Ingham added that he expected “any effort to achieve my client’s objectives as stated above will be aggressively contested by James.” He said that Spears hoped to hire a law firm with “substantial expertise in handling contested litigation in a highly complex case such as this one.”
Ingham declined to comment. Britney Spears’ current conservator Montgomery did not respond to a request for comment.
A status hearing in the case is scheduled for Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Earlier this month, denying fan-led allegations that the singer’s affairs were not being properly handled, James told Page Six, “All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything. The world doesn’t have a clue. It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business. I love my daughter. But this is our business. It’s private.”
Britney Spears was first placed under a conservatorship in 2008. Her father served as her conservator until he stepped back from the post following health issues last fall when. Since then, licensed conservator Jodi Montgomery has taken on the role.
