Q. Your Madrasapattinam director AL Vijay is presently working on the Kangana Ranaut starrer Thalaivi. What are your expectations from the film?
A. I look back fondly on our work in Madrasapattinam and Thandavaam, and because of his hands-on direction and attention to detail, Vijay remains one of my favourite directors.
Having spent a significant amount of time in Tamil Nadu, and much of it during Jayalalithaa’s time in office, I’m naturally familiar with her captivating story: The top student, fluent in several languages, who was pushed into a career in film, where she dominated until turning her gaze towards politics, subsequently serving as CM for over 14 years – Wow! I’m excited to see how Vijay presents this larger than life personality – but I have no doubt it will be with a very studied approach, focused on the real person behind the facade, most likely highlighting lesser-known and even more mundane events that led her to become the juggernaut that she was.
I have not yet had the pleasure of working with Miss Ranaut, but I have seen a couple of her performances and from what I can tell, she is an absolutely wonderful actress, and like Vijay, a perfectionist. Together, I’m sure they’ll make a film that keeps the audience captivated while staying true to real-life events.
Q. You will next be seen in Roohi Afzana alongside Janhvi Kapoor & Rajkummar Rao. Tell us something about the film and working with these actors.
A. I LOVED shooting Roohi Afzana. It’s wonderful to be working with Rajkummar again, he’s an amazing actor and such a sweet guy. We first collaborated on Chittagong (2012) with a cast that featured Nawazuddin Siddique, Manoj Bajpayee, Vijay Varma, Barry John, etc. Then Bose Dead/Alive (2017), Now Roohi Afzana.
This was my first time working with Janhvi and Varun, and I hope it’s our first hit together with many more to follow.
‘Horror-Comedy’ is a genre I’ve never worked in before, and my role, as a mix of observer and participant, is different from anything I’ve done. Quite frankly the film is incredibly unique, bizarre, and hilarious.
