One expected at least two out of the three new releases of the week, Chakravyuh, Ajab Gazabb Love and Rush – to take a heartening opening at the box office. While it was always a given that at least one of them would suffer badly due to factors like – a) arriving in a crowd, b) failing to get the right screen space and c) get further crushed by competition from Student Of The Year, the fact that none of the three could succeed in becoming a craze by the end of first weekend was disappointing.

This was evidenced in the manner in which the three films performed. Early arrival of Chakravyuh didn’t help the cause much as after an ordinary first day, despite Dushehra being a holiday, the film could register good opening only in select few multiplexes. Other than that it couldn’t really score well and with rest of the five day long weekend not really showing any escalation in numbers, the writing was clear on the wall for this Prakash Jha directed affair. With the film collecting just around 12 crores, this is way lower than director’s last film Aarakshan which had seen 20 crores coming in over the weekend.

Ajab Gazabb Love, which was expected to take the best start of them all, couldn’t benefit either with the collections around the 5 crore mark. This one has actually come as a rude shock since the film was promoted quite well, the promos had made a good impression and the reviews too ranged from decent to good. Moreover, those who saw the film liked what unfolded on screen. However the initial footfall was way too low and as a result the word of mouth was limited as well. Still, if the film manages to hang on during the weekdays, it could well get some moolah rolling for itself before it faces competition in week to come.

Rush, the only film which actually featured a big star in his own right, Emraan Hashmi, took the poorest opening of them all. It saw a sparse release for itself, didn’t quite get too many good shows for itself and was further marred by the fact that the end product was hardly impressive. Poor reviews killed whatever little prospects that it carried and ultimately Rush went down as an affair that would be remembered more as a goodwill gesture by Emraan to have completed it than anything else. With the weekend collections around the 2.5 crore mark, it is the poorest opening that an Emraan starrer has taken for a long time.
