What’s Bad: Misses the spark what the first one generated, the story goes haywire in between and loses the grip.

Pacific Rim: Uprising fast-forwards the story 10 years from where the Kaiju war was ended. The world is at ease as there is no sign of Kaijus from everywhere and Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) is managing his living by selling the stolen precious parts of Jaegers. For the uninitiated, Kaijus are the monster with a mission of destroying human life from earth and Jaegers are human’s answer to these giants.
When Jake gets poisoned for his wrongdoings he gets an offer for eliminating the prison time. He gets asked for rejoining the Pan-Pacific Defence Corps to recruit the new trainers for learning how to pilot a Jaeger. He teams up with his long lost friend Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) and explores many hidden truths about how Kaijus are not really extinct. At the launch of remote-controlled Jaegers, a rogue Jaeger arrives from the sea destroying almost everything. This proves to be a turning point of the film and the rest of the story revolves around finding about this sudden appearance of a rogue Jaeger.
Steven S. DeKnight teams up with T.S Nowlin to pen the story for this one. This, however, intriguing it falls short at many places. It’s a sequel so naturally will be compared with the first part and this huge friend does not live up to those expectations. At times the movie becomes unbearably loud which really tests your patience.
The concept of Jaeger gone rogue is very interesting and has been very well executed in the story. The mystery element remains alive until the end when Steven decides to treat us with one blockbuster climax. The entire robotic atmosphere created by the makers leaves us in awe but at times too much of CGI makes the scenes look anime.

John Boyega takes forward the legacy set by his father in the film. Fresh from the Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Boyega is not heroic which makes him special in the film. His chemistry with Cailee Spaeny is remarkable and helps on building a connection with the film.
Scott Eastwood has not much to do in the film but shares few good scenes with Boyega. Charlie Day gets an update in this one and his anyway interesting character gets more entertaining.
The daredevil Steven S. DeKnight marks his debut into Hollywood with this one and gets into the shoes of Guillermo del Toro perfectly. When you have such extravagance at the tip of your hands, going out of control is a natural tendency. Steven, too, does the same at some points but overall he delivers a fine entertaining product.
Music by Lorne Balfe fits in well with the scenes. People usually have this complaint from Marvel movies of exerting the music beneath the dialogues. Lorne and team have made sure to filter music so that it should click with the audience.
All said and done, not as good as the first part but a definite watch. Jon Boyega delivers a good performance. Director, Steven S. DeKnight, ends this with hinting at the third part which could be bigger than ever.
