Gangubai Kathiawadi: Alia Bhatt Was NOT Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s First Choice For The Role, Read To Know Who Was!

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Ali Bhatt has been the hottest topic of discussion since the past few days. The film that is in the pre-production stage has created a huge buzz even before going on the floors. But did you know, Alia wasn’t the first choice to play the titular role?

Yes, you read it right. Gangubai Kathiawadi is a story that has been with SLB for the longest time and he has been waiting to do a film on it. According to the reports in Times Of India, SLB first approached Rani Mukerji who has already worked with him in two projects including Black and Saawariya.

But due to some reasons, the actor had to pass the project. Further, the director approached Priyanka Chopra Jonas who was then working on his 2015 release Bajirao Mastani.

A source close to the production told TOI, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Gangubai’ was initially to be made with Rani Mukerji in the lead. However, things didn’t work out with Rani and that’s when he decided to ask Priyanka Chopra while filming ‘Bajirao Mastani’. The project couldn’t take off as PeeCee was running on a tight schedule while also pursuing a career in Hollywood.”

Meanwhile, it was recently that we saw SLB’s Inshallah getting shelved that was supposed to stars, Salman Khan and Alia. This gave SLB a chance to use Alia’s already acquired dates and cast her in Gangubai.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a story of a brothel owner known to be Mumbai’s most powerful woman who has the biggest of the mafias as her clients. The film is inspired by writer Hussain Zaidi’s novel Mafia Queens Of Mumbai and is set for a release on September 11, 2020.
