Universal’s action sequel, Fast Five , debuted on top of the North American box-office chart with a take of US $86.2 million. This was Universal Pictures’ biggest-grossing opening weekend ever.
At no. 2 was 20th Century Fox’s Rio which added $14.8 million to its kitty in its third weekend. Its total for 17 days went up to $104 million. It fell one place from the previous weekend. Madea’s Big Happy Family also fell one place, to no. 3. It collected $9.9 million in its second weekend to take its 10-day total to $40.9 million.
Twentieth Century Fox’s Water For Elephants came in fourth. Falling one place from the previous weekend, it added $9.3 million to its kitty in its second weekend. Its total for 10 days went up to $32.5 million. Prom rounded off the Top 5 chart with a gross of $4.7 million in its debut weekend.
