When the heart wrenching trailer of Mary Kom was released, no one could believe it was all a work of a debutant filmmaker. Omung Kumar cannot be called a novice given his prior experience in the industry.
In an exclusive interview to Koimoi, the filmmaker came out candid about the inception of his first film. Kumar said, “Five years ago I started writing my own script. The stories are a product of the way I think, and I have a tendency to think grand, big scale. It was all a Moulin Rouge type of a thing. My genre is that. They were very tough scripts but it was always in my mind that whatever I do it has to make a mark. But the problem was that for a debut director it was too huge a script. I had the edge because all actors were my friends. So to approach them was easier but it was difficult to commit to them.”

Omung continued, “It was three and a half years back that I decided to come back to reality. Since I was only doing that, I took my own time with it. I wanted to take the gradual way of going but I did not want to feel desperate.”
Adding to the same, Omung went on to explain how the framework of his idea was ready even before other biopics had released. While both Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Paan Singh Tomar were the notable names that paved way for other films of that order, Omung’s pre-production work had started by then. His idea on a biopic was a resultant of the filmy keeda inside him.
He said, “I began thinking and spoke to my writer Saiwyn. I told him give me a female oriented script, a biopic. I don’t how it went on, but exactly these terms were used. I am talking a time when biopics weren’t as frequent in Bollywood. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag hadn’t come, Paan Singh Tomar hadn’t come. It so happened that this film just came to me. I was looking for a challenging main role. I told him to give me script that if I were an actor or actress wouldn’t say no to. Challenge me! Right from then, I wanted Mary Kom to be the Mother India of my career.”
Mary Kom is all set to release on 5th September and stars Priyanka Chopra in lead role.
