What’s Good: A horror movie without any cliched haunted-house moments, goosebump background score & a scary story which makes sense.

What’s Bad: Loses the grip in between and boasts some over-the-top hyperbolic moments.

Loo Break: Those who’re not used to this genre could take a loo break forcibly.

Watch or Not?: Even if you aren’t a fan of horror flicks, you should give this a try for numerous chilling moments and outstanding performances.

User Rating:

The story unfolds introducing a sweet introvert Arunabh (Parambrata Chatterjee) as he meets his type of girl Piyali (Ritabhari Chakraborty) in an arranged marriage kind of setup. With few interesting turn of events, Arunabh meets Rukhsana (Anushka Sharma) chained in an abandoned house. Yes, she’s supernatural, but is she evil? Prosit (director) maintains this mystery till the end. Enters the devilish twist, Professor Khasim Ali (Rajat Kapoor) playing one the most complicated & intriguing characters written for him.

With the entrance of Rukhsana in Arunabh’s life, things start to get complicated between him and Piyali. Rukhsana comes with a dark backstory which Roy decides to unfold bit by bit till the end. Who is a professor, why he is in the search of Rukhsana and many such questions remain unanswered till the crux of the movie arrives?

Pari Movie Review: Script Analysis

Penned by Prosit and Abhishek Banerjee, this surely is one of the best stories to come out of Bollywood. The level of intriguing gets so high at times you kind of ignored some of the silliest loopholes. The love track between Anushka & Parambrata has a graph fluctuating with every passing scene. At points, the situations are so real but sometimes you just can’t bear them. I had few seats empty to my left and right but in many scenes, I felt the thumping near my seats caused by a guy sitting many seats away.

Horror surely is not there for the entire time, but for the time it’s there it scares you. Beautifully executed spooky scenes and their sudden occurrences are paisa-vasool for fans of this genre. The story gets transported from Kolkata to Bangladesh, present to flashback but Roy manages to keep it as simple as possible. For any horror movie, the moment of devil-revelation is the soul & Pari excels in this section.

Pari Movie Review: Star Performance

Anushka Sharma, obviously, is in an avatar no one could’ve ever imagined it. We saw some thrilling traces in her during NH10, but in Pari she has aimed for a home run and succeeds in achieving it towards the climax. She is beautiful & horrific at the same time. The unpredictability of her character, the variation of her facial expressions are the results of one amazingly written character.

Parambrata Chatterjee fulfills the director’s vision as a pro. His unusual chemistry with Anushka Sharma works well. When you have someone as talented as Anushka Sharma having time of her life with her character, one tends to get into a shell but Parambrata overcomes this with his brilliant presence.

Rajat Kapoor has nailed his character, yet again. From his first frame, he proves why he’s considered as a legend in this field. His one-eyed touch will really disgust many but that’s what the makers intend to do so. Ritabhari Chakraborty looks super cute and has some very important sequences in the second half. Her overflowing charm supports her act as she gives a good performance.

Pari Movie Review: Direction, Music

Prosit Roy, making his debut with Pari, is the real hero of the film. Scripting a complicated story, teaming up a stellar cast and delivering a product within a controlled budget is not every first-timer can do. Though he has chosen a tough genre for his debut, it would really be interesting to see what he does next. Giving us Pari, he has proved how Bollywood can really churn up a horror film minus skin show, overacting and cringe-worthy script.

Usually, it’s the music composer who’s credited first in this section but Pari has a winner in its background score composer – Ketan Sodha. Apart from Talvar and Vicky Donor, Pari is Ketan’s third movie as a full-time composer. The nail-cutter effect, the music of cartoon channel, thumping of doors; Ketan covers this scary canvas with his spine-chilling effects. There’s just one song in the film composed by Anupam Roy and it serves well as a situational track.

Pari Movie Review: The Last Word

Hollywood, please take out the notepad and write down the stuff from Pari on how to make a non-cliched horror film. Surely one of the best in this genre & a must watch for the fans. Producer Anushka Sharma needs a special mention to make this possible.

Three and a half stars!

  1. Dont tell hollywood on how to make horror movies
They are 20 years ahead of u crap people…exorcist which was released back in 90’s was thousand times better than ur 2018’s pari..

U guys are copycats thats what everyone says…
U should change to COPYWOOD.. not bollywood…

    Flush it out..bro

    • My friend “POL”..I have see many horror movies of Hollywood. Most of them were nonsense and most of them even failed to create horror. you cannot scare people only with background score and screaming voice. Horror should be like after watching movies you cannot forget the scenes for many days and it keeps haunting you for many days and I think “PARI” has such kind of element that you will remember the movie for a long time and it will keep haunting you..
“PARI” is a well made horror movie which actually has a strong and gripping story behind horror.

      • You’ve no idea what you’re talking about.. More than a dozen horror films are released in Hollywood of different sub-genres.
They’re are way ahead, you just can’t compare Bollywood/Hollywood by just watching few crap horror films like Conjuring, Insidious.

      • Tausif so you’re saying that Bollywood horror movies are better than Hollywood?
        Are you insane?
There are hundreds of hollywood horror movies with gripping story and unforgettable scenes better than this third class pice of crap Pari.

  2. Umesh Punwani You just got excited after watching an average bollywood horror films, don’t tell Hollwood what to do. Watch some quality Hollywood horror movies before, then talk.

Been follwoing Koimoi from years, never expected something so ignorant from Koimoi staff.

  3. If we consider reviews from people who understand the concept of the “Evil Jinn” – Lucifer/Iblis/Shytan/Saatan in its totality, then the movie must receive 5 stars. You need to know the concept from that the Taura, the Bible and the Holy Quran says about the Evil or Shaytaan. Again I am not asking you to believe it, but to know what’s written to understand the concept of this beautiful movie. However, I must say that the movie only portrays one of the versions about the acts or rituals of the Evil Jinns or Shaytaan and their preachers that has actually taken place in many parts of the World. But the beauty of the movie is that it shows the absolute TRUTH as to how these saatanic rituals were encountered, what were the acts of the evil and evil’s deciples, how innocent human rings were tortured in both cases, and the aftermath of the survival of Evil baby etc…. People who didn’t find funny and old horror concepts such as the praat athma and the regular bullshit that you keep finding in Hindi horror movies which is hilarious, can simply not understand the beauty and facts of this movie. I know we have such audience in India who are either too secientific or absolute idiots to whom this movie is way above their understanding and write crap about such movies in their reviews.
This movie is worth an international audience in terms of the script, direction, acting and everything. Most of the international audience will love it if dubbed in English. Great and excellent work of the director and Anushka and the rest of the crew. It’s Like WOW and I give it 7 stars as its way better than even some of the top Hollywood horror movies. The true happenings of a real life supernatural situation played so well that it feels as if it is really taking place. No bullshit and over exaggeration added which makes it so real, absolute and thrilling. Excellent movie.

    • Keep your philosophy to yourself kiddo.
Stop overhyping ordinary movie Pari. Have you ever visited a film festival in your life? There are dozens of horror films released every year across global based solely on content. As compared to those movies, Pari doesn’t stand a chance.
Pari is barely one horror movie in the history of Bollywood that you can say is average & you’ve already started to compare it with top Holylwood movies?
lol thats hillarious, you’re probably the dumbest person I’ve ever seen.
