Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice has always been an example of a wealthy English gentleman. After all, he owned a magnificent estate, was seen among the elite classes of Britain, and had enough money to live comfortably without needing a job.

Yet, there’s a surprising fact about Jane Austen’s hero. Despite his extraordinary social status, Fitzwilliam Darcy doesn’t have a title. He is neither a lord nor a duke. In fact, as per the social norms of the time, Darcy is only a commoner.

But as it turned out, in Regency England, a noble title was not the only way to earn respect and influence. So, let’s see how Mr. Darcy belongs among the aristocrats.

Mr. Darcy’s Enormous Fortune In ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Made Him Powerful

One of Darcy’s greatest advantages is Pemberley, that is, his magnificent country estate in Derbyshire. In ‘Pride and Prejudice’, we learn that his annual income is reported to be £10,000. Back in the 19th century, the amount was quite extraordinary.

More importantly, Darcy’s wealth is derived from inherited land rather than from a conventional profession. Naturally, owning such an extensive property also brought potential political and social influence.

Large landowners could exercise considerable influence over local communities and even parliamentary elections. But money and power weren’t the only leverage Jane Austen‘s Darcy had. He also had something that couldn’t simply be purchased, that is, powerful family connections.

Although Darcy inherited no noble titles, his mother, Lady Anne Darcy, belonged to the Fitzwilliam family and was the sister of the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Even his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, was the younger son of an earl. These connections helped Darcy secure his place among the noble British people.

After all, it was the gentleman’s family background that could determine which social circles welcomed him and even the type of marriage prospects he received. And, from that perspective, Darcy had the financial independence of a major landowner and the social connections of the aristocracy.
