Nearly fifty years after its release, Rocky remains one of the most profitable bets in film history. It cost just over $1 million to make and was shot in 28 days. It earned $225 million worldwide, as per The Numbers, and became the highest-grossing film of 1976, winning three Oscars, including Best Picture.
The budget figures may vary by source, from about $960K to $1.1 million, but the return was roughly 200 times the cost.
How Sylvester Stallone Fought To Get Rocky Made
The story behind Rocky is unlike anything you have ever read. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script in three days, reportedly inspired by a 1975 fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. At that time, he was broke and unknown, yet he turned down an offer of up to $360K because the producers wanted a different actor in the lead. When CBS asked him about it, he kept it short, saying, “I said, pass. I can’t do it.” He has joked before that he would sooner let the caterpillars play Rocky.

Soon the producers gave in, and after a big budget cut, Sylvester Stallone got the part. You could see the low budget everywhere. Director John G. Avildsen once said, “The budget for the music was 25 grand.” That music still gave us “Gonna Fly Now,” which was nominated for an Oscar.
The critics also picked up on it fast. A critic gave the film four stars and said Stallone reminded him of “the young Marlon Brando.” Rocky got 10 Academy Award nominations and won three.
The Best Picture went to producers Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler, the Best Director went to John G. Avildsen, and the film also won Best Film Editing. It was the first sports film to win Best Picture. In 2006, the Writers Guild of America ranked Stallone’s screenplay 78th on its list of the best of all time.
The success grew into a whole franchise. Rocky IV made $300.5 million on a $28 million budget, and the Creed spin-offs carried the series to a new generation.
I Play Rocky: Release Date, Cast, & Early Reviews
Now the story behind Rocky is coming to theaters. The film is a biographical drama that tells the true story of Sylvester Stallone’s grueling struggle to get the 1976 classic Rocky made. Amazon MGM’s I Play Rocky, directed by Oscar winner Peter Farrelly of Green Book, opens in select theaters on November 6, 2026, with a wider release later in the month. Anthony Ippolito plays a young Stallone, and Matt Dillon plays his father. The cast also includes Jay Duplass as Avildsen, P.J. Byrne as Winkler, and Toby Kebbell as Chartoff.
Early reviews are mostly warm, though not everyone agrees. One outlet praised the way the film sees Stallone’s real-life fight as an echo of how he got Rocky made. Another was harsher, calling it a “walking piece of pastiche.” The film was the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Stallone is not involved, though. He told The Playlist, “I have zero to do with it,” though he later told CBS he thought the film told his story well. The timing fits as well. A broke actor bet everything on himself and helped make a film that earned about 200 times its cost, and now that story is a movie too.
