A house swap that begins as a dream vacation soon turns into a deadly game of lies, betrayal, and murder in Netflix’s German thriller A Couple of Lies. As the series reaches its final episode, the truth behind the arrangement comes to light, exposing a calculated plan involving infidelity, greed, and a shocking attempt to frame an innocent man. But who was really pulling the strings, and does anyone manage to escape the consequences?

A Couple of Lies Plot

The story is about two wealthy couples. A Couple of Lies is based on the bestseller Bytet (Stefan Ahnhem). Helene (Frida Gustavsson) and Carl Wester (Fares Fares) swap their modern home in Stockholm for an idyllic villa in Sicily owned by Scarlett (Emma Appleton) and Adam (Jakob Oftebro), who in turn move into the Stockholm bungalow. This is part of an online home swap arrangement. Interestingly, neither couple has ever met.

What was meant to be a fun vacation turns sinister and toxic with multiple murders, infidelity, greed, and subterfuge. Helene and Carl’s vacation turns into a nightmare when a decomposed dead body is found in the well.

Why Does Adam Kill Tom?

The plot that was brewing in the series comes to a boil in the final episode. We learn about the motive for the murders and how the plan was executed by Adam and Helene to usurp the wealth and get everyone out of the way. Scarlett’s brother Tom (Diarmuid Noyes) finds out about Adam’s infidelity and threatens to expose his relationship with Helene. He takes a video of the two of them together in Scarlett’s house. Tom also learns about Helene’s pregnancy and guesses it belongs to Adam. He decides to expose them to his sister Scarlett. Adam opposes Tom, and they end up in a scuffle. In the process, Adam pushes Tom down the stairs and kills him. Adam plots to pin the blame on Carl by fabricating evidence against him.

How Adam & Helene Frame Carl For Tom’s Murder

Adam uses Carl’s blackout episodes to his advantage and plots to frame him for the murder of Tom. He comes up with the plan to swap houses online and instructs Helene to convince Carl to move into the villa in Sicily for vacation. Likewise, Adam uses the excuse of an exhibition of his paintings to convince Scarlett to move to Stockholm. Since Carl and Helene arrive early, they stay in a hotel.

Adam comes to the hotel to drop off his car keys at the reception for Carl—Adam’s vintage car is part of the online swap deal. He waits in the lobby while Helene drugs Carl by spiking his drink and takes his mobile. Adam and Helene place Tom’s body on the road and drive over it. They deliberately splash Tom’s blood on the car and clean it so that it can be used as evidence. All along, Carl’s phone is with Helene, so that the GPS tracking can prove Carl’s presence at the spot of the murder. Adam deliberately hides his phone in the hotel lobby so that GPS can prove his presence at the hotel at the time of the murder.

How Ragnar Blackmails Helene

Ragnar, Carl’s partner, learns about Helene’s ploy to usurp Carl’s wealth. He also has evidence against her of Carl’s murder. He forces her to part with her shares of the hotel business in exchange for his silence. Desperate, Helene signs the deal and is left with no share or profit of the wealth.

How Scarlett Discovers Adam’s Secret

Suspicious of Adam, Scarlett follows him to the forest. She discovers that Adam uses another phone, hidden in the forest, to talk to someone. Scarlett senses that Adam has an extramarital affair. She stealthily takes the phone and gives it to her neighbor Silvia, a retired police detective, to crack the password and retrieve the messages. Silvia opens the phone and reads the messages; she is shocked to find evidence of Tom’s murder. Silvia immediately warns Scarlett to stay away from Adam. It goes to Scarlett’s voicemail as she fails to take Silvia’s call.

What Happens In The Final Confrontation?

Scarlett confronts Adam about the secret phone and raises doubts about his extramarital affair. She tells Adam about the phone and Silvia decoding the messages in it. Adam drags Scarlett, and she passes out. Adam confronts Silvia and drags her to the cliff, where he kills her and dumps her in the river.

In the meantime, Helene arrives at the bungalow. Scarlett regains her consciousness and is surprised to find Helene. There is a confrontation between them as Scarlett starts putting the pieces together and suspects Helene to be Adam’s girlfriend. Adam arrives at the bungalow and is shocked to see Helene and Scarlett face to face. He overpowers Scarlett and drags her to a pool. He attempts to drown Scarlett in the pool, forgetting that she can hold her breath underwater for a long time.

Assuming she is dead, Adam walks out of the pool when suddenly Scarlett grabs him by his leg, causing him to fall and hit the marble stairs. The impact kills him. She learns that Helene is carrying Adam’s baby and spares her out of mercy. Helene leaves on a boat, dejected and in tears, unsure of her future. Police arrive at the bungalow and take Scarlett to the mainland.
