Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved (El ser querido) stars Javier Bardem as Esteban Martínez, a two-time Oscar-winning director with a reputation for violence and excess. Victoria Luengo plays Emilia, the daughter he abandoned and hasn’t seen in 13 years. He offers her the lead in his next film, and the set quickly becomes the place where their old wounds reopen. The ending doesn’t tie anything up neatly, and viewers are left asking what, if anything, has changed.

Spoilers Alert: This article contains The Beloved spoilers ahead.

The Beloved Plot Summary

Esteban meets Emilia for lunch after 13 years apart. She is a soap-opera actress who also works as a waitress. He offers her the lead role in his new film. The conversation quickly turns to their past, and the two remember it very differently. When Esteban says he loved taking her to the movies as a child, she answers that on the trip to see Kill Bill: Vol. 2, he was drunk and high and got into a fistfight. He blames Emilia’s mother, Charo, for turning her against him. Emilia accepts the part anyway.

The film within the film, Desierto, shoots on the arid island of Fuerteventura, which stands in for 1932 Western Sahara. Esteban starts out supportive and cuts her slack when she stumbles. He also tells her to stop drinking. Then a group dinner scene goes wrong. The cast can’t stop laughing at how seriously he takes it, and he grows angrier with every take. He ends up focusing his rage on Emilia. The crew begins walking off in protest of his behavior. Emilia holds herself together and finishes the film.

Why Does Esteban Lose Control On Set?

Esteban’s temper takes over. His fury at a simple scene reverts to the kind of verbal and physical violence Emilia knew as a child. For her, it’s not just a bad day on set. It’s proof that the man who abandoned her hasn’t changed and that he’s humiliating her in front of her colleagues again.

What Happens In The Final Scenes?

Emilia stays and finishes the shoot. Before she leaves the set, she sits down with her father one last time and asks whether he finally acknowledges the damage he has done to her. The film ends ambiguously. Whether father and daughter will stay in each other’s lives is left open, but the sense is that something between them has shifted.

Does Esteban Ever Apologize To Emilia?

He spends most of the film insisting that Emilia misremembers her childhood, and he can’t admit his regret, even to himself. Any change in him is small and partial, and the film refuses to turn it into a redemption.

What Does The Ending Mean?

The Beloved is about two people trying to agree on a shared version of the past, and the ending is honest enough not to claim they get there. Emilia finishing the film is her victory. She doesn’t walk away, and she doesn’t let him break her, but she also doesn’t absolve him. Esteban’s offer of a role was never going to repair thirteen years of absence. At best, it opened a conversation neither of them could have had any other way.
