It was 29 years ago that Bollywood witnessed the massiest clash between two films. While one rode on a superstar ensemble, the other had the power of God. Initially, it was not expected to be such a huge clash between Sholay & Jai Santoshi Maa, both of which were released on August 15, 1975. But what awaited them was historical at the box office.
Sholay VS Jai Santoshi Maa Opening Day Collection
Ramesh Sippy’s action film was based on a headline-grabbing cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Amjad Khan, Sanjeev Kapoor, Asrani, Jagdeep, & others. However, the film opened to only 8 lakh collection on the first day!
Meanwhile, it was a neck-to-neck competition when Jai Santoshi Maa clashed with a huge film like Sholay written by Salim-Javed, which also earned 7 lakh on the opening day. Directed by Vijay Sharma, the film starred Kanan Kaushal & Bharat Bhushan.

Sholay – Budget & Profit
The Ramesh Sippy directorial was made on a budget of 2.5 crore only, and it earned 15 crore net in its lifetime in India, while it jumped massively to earn 50 crore worldwide. A huge number in those days! The film earned a profit of 500% at the box office. It was a record that seemed unachievable.
Jai Santoshi Maa – Budget & Profit
However, Sholay’s record was broken in a few days by Jai Santoshi, who was released the same day. The film was made on a budget of only 30 lakh and collected 5.25 crore in its lifetime, churning out a profit of 1616%. The devotional film became the highest-grossing film released on Independence Day, and the record is still unbeatable.
Indeed, this was the biggest Independence Day release record ever, which cumulatively stands unshaken to date!
