‘Godzilla’ fans would know about the terrifying monsters he has fought over the years, but there’s hardly anyone who has challenged him like King Ghidorah. The three-headed golden dragon is as memorable to us as the hero of the franchise.
Now, with ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ bringing the legendary rivalry back to the screens, Ghidorah is back in the spotlight, and this will be the ninth live-action confrontation that we’ll see. But don’t underestimate Ghidorah as just a monster with powers.
Even though Ghidorah’s origins have varied across movies, his abilities make him a dangerous opponent, and once, he has even been a hero. Here’s why this golden dragon is an important part of the Godzilla franchise.

King Ghidorah & Godzilla’s History Goes Way Back To 60 Years
King Ghidorah made his first appearance in 1964’s Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. The movie introduced him as an alien responsible for destroying the civilization on Venus before he could do the same to Earth. Godzilla and Rodan had to set aside their differences to fight him.
Then again, the villain came back in 1965, and later, in 1972, in Invasion of Astro and Godzilla vs. Gigan, and many more times. Even in the latest, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the golden dragon was seen. Even though the villain has appeared so many times in the franchise, there are still debates about his origin.
Initially, Ghidorah was seen as another harmless golden creature. But through time travel and nuclear radiation during World War II, we started seeing physical changes in him.
How Powerful Is King Ghidorah Compared To Godzilla?
Till now, King Ghidorah’s most recognizable weapons are his gravity beams, that is, the powerful yellow lightning attacks fired from his head. Although individual beams are weaker than Godzilla’s atomic breath, repeated attacks from all three heads can result in considerable damage.
Besides, his immense size and his ability to fly also give him an advantage over Godzilla. Ghidorah can lift monsters with his talons, carry them high in the sky, and can even drop them from dangerous heights. On the other hand, Keizer Ghidorah possesses an even stronger attack called Destroyed Thunder, which helps him manipulate gravity.
With so much power, can our hero, Godzilla, fight Ghidorah and win once more?
