Vikrant Massey has finally got his due as a star in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail. However, he was at the peak at a time when Television was peaking when he decided to leave it all for a career in films. Vikrant played Shyam in TV’s most loved show – Balika Vadhu. His character was one of the most loved characters of that time.

Recently, in an interview, he even confessed that he was earning crores when he was working on Television. He also recalled a time when he wasn’t living in such a well-off condition, and his so-called friends judged him for his home and discussed his living conditions on WhatsApp chats!

In an interview with Samdish Bhatia, Vikrant Massey recalled, “Ek incident tha jahaan maine logon ko ghar bulaya, apne doston ko, bahut gehre dost the, and I am proud of it. I am not ashamed of it. Main aapko maansikta bata raha hun, logon ki, Kyunki meri maa bahut accha khana banati hai. To maine bola ghar aao yaar. Daawat pe bulaya hai sabko. Jab ghar ki dasha dekhi unhone, unhone dekha ki plastic ki kursiyaan hai ghar pe, paint chip ho raha hai, silan lagi hui hai ceiling pe, kitchen unke hisaab se aesthetically clean nahi tha, to agle din se phir unka bartaav meri taraf badal gaya. Wo khaaye piye aur ek ghante ke andar hi andar…we have to go, we have to leave. Of course, I could see the discomfort.”

However, what happened next was more heartbreaking. Vikrant revealed, “Via via mujhe chats dikhayi gayi hain ki Vikrant ka ghar kaisa hai. Oh My God! He lives in a house like that. Usko dekh ke to lagta nahi hai.”

The actor then narrated how he earned a place for himself in the industry. He further continued narrating his journey, “Yeh hua ki TV mein bahut paisa kama liya phir. Matlab 24 ki umar mein pehla ghar khareed liya. I was making a lot of money. Ab sab kuch bata hi rahe hain to matlab, ek 24 saal ke ladke ke liye 35 lakh rupaya bahut hota hai mahina ka. Ek aise ladke ke liye jiske ghar 15 din father ki salary chalti thi, 16th day se crisis management shuru ho jata tha.”

Vikrant made his debut on TV with Disney’s show Dhoom Machao Dhoom, where he was paired opposite Sriti Jha. Later, he was the main lead in a show called Dharam Veer, where he was cast alongside Rajat Tokas. His claim to fame came with Colors TV’s Balika Vadhu. He then played the lead in a show titled Baba Aiso Var Deejo, which was the unique love story of a dwarf woman and a common young man. His career peaked when he played Ayaan Ahmed Khan in Zee TV’s Qubool Hai, but he then decided to quit.

Recalling the decision, the actor said, “35 lakh rupaya mahine ka mera contract tha mere haath mein. I left it. I said nahi yaar paise se neend to nahi aa rahi bhai. Ab accha kaam karke hi thoda sukoon dhoondhne ki koshish karenge, and that’s how it started.”

In 2013, Vikrant made his debut with Ranveer Singh’s Lootera as the supporting character, and in 2015, he was cast in Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, for which even Aamir Khan called him and appreciated his work.

Here’s a clip of Vikrant talking about his journey that was shared on Why Dekho’s Instagram handle.
