Matthew Perry’s onscreen wedding to Courteney Cox in the Season 7 finale of ‘Friends’ was one of the most beautiful scenes. Most of us still go back and play it on loop just to see Chandler and Monica’s chemistry on their D-day. But to Matthew Perry’s family, the same episode brings back painful memories.

According to the late actor’s sister, Mia Perry, the episode brought mixed emotions for the family. As Perry had a long, ongoing struggle with addiction, the family believed he might never get married or have children.

When the family watched the ‘Friends’ episode, Mia Perry recalled, “We all knew that he had wanted that in life. He wanted a partner, and he wanted children”. While talking to PEOPLE, Perry’s sister went on to add, “We all knew how serious his disorder was, so there was this sense of, ‘Who knows what’s going to happen?”.

Matthew Perry Was Battling With Addiction Behind the Wedding

In the 2022 book, ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,’ Matthew Perry revealed that he was immediately taken back to the treatment center in a “pickup truck” just after the wedding scene wrapped.

Apart from that, Perry also wrote about his day-to-day struggles in his book, including his constant weight fluctuations throughout the series. He wrote, “When I’m carrying weight, it’s alcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots of pills.”

Perry spent years trying to recover from the addiction and even ended up spending $7 million on treatments. But despite the efforts, the actor ended up using substances on and off throughout his life.

Matthew Perry’s Failed Relationship Added to His Struggles

While most people only saw Matthew Perry’s struggles with addiction, only a few knew about his constant relationship struggles. He dated several famous actresses, including Julia Roberts and Lizzy Caplan, but all his relationships ended pretty soon. Even after he later got engaged to literary manager Molly Hurwitz, they parted ways in 2021.

In his memoir, Perry delved deeper into his habit of ending relationships out of fear of abandonment. Besides living in constant fear of being left alone, he also regretted not proposing to his former girlfriend Rachel Dunn. No matter how much fame he got, nothing could fill the void in his personal life.

Perry was even hopeful as he talked about finding love, building a family, and becoming a father. But unfortunately, those dreams remained unfulfilled as, on October 28, 2023, Matthew Perry passed away due to the acute effects of ketamine at the age of 54.
