Pirates of the Caribbean is back in the discussion, and all thanks to Johnny Depp for that. As the actor prepares to return to the screen as Scoorge, he has also shown interest in stepping back into the shoes of Captain Jack Sparrow. However, he has listed some conditions for that to happen.
While Depp’s possible comeback has made us quite excited, the hopes of Keira Knightley, aka our Elizabeth Swann, reuniting with the Pirates Of The Caribbean crew seem bleak. Sure, Knightley became a global star after the role, and she never looked back. But that period of her life wasn’t the best one off-screen.
In fact, in a 2024 interview with The Times, Knightley opened up about her experience on the iconic movie set and the criticism she received that made her unwilling to ever commit to a major franchise.

Why Keira Knightley Won’t Return To Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 Movie?
Keira Knightley’s first movie in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise was back in 2003, in The Curse of the Black Pearl. Once released, the movie became an instant hit and earned more than $654 million worldwide. However, Knightley’s experience was hardly positive. In the interview quoted above, she said the film made her a target of public criticism.
She said, “It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time. I was seen as sh*t because of them, and yet because they did so well”.
The success of Pirates Of The Caribbean eventually helped Knightley secure roles in critically acclaimed films such as Pride and Prejudice and The Imitation Game. However, throughout her rise in popularity, she faced heavy criticism for her appearances and personal life.
Knightley Also Had Other Reasons To Stay Away From Big Franchises
Apart from the widespread public criticism Keira Knightley had to endure, she also complained about the odd schedules demanded by such big-budget Hollywood franchises like Pirates Of The Caribbean. The actress added, “The hours are insane. It’s years of your life; you have no control over where you’re filming, how long you’re filming, or what you’re filming.”
Besides, such franchises often took years to film, and the worldwide promotion took a major toll on the actress as well. This was another reason she could never go back to major franchises.
Of course, Elizabeth Swann’s character, the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann, had one of the most memorable stories; Bloom and Knightley decided not to return for the franchise’s fourth installment. Ultimately, the two actors made a brief cameo in the fifth installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales.
