Tony Stark sacrificed his life to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame, but as you all know, Marvel is bringing back the actor again as the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The casting, however, has raised several questions and led to several fan theories over the last couple of years.
While the trailers have shown Doom in his signature armor and mask, his unmasked identity has been largely kept hidden. However, several comic book connections and MCU spoilers have given fans plenty to discuss.
While some fans believe Doom is an evil Tony Stark variant, others think he stole Tony’s body and deliberately took his appearance. And as the Russo brothers have also teased a connection between the two characters, the answer could be more complicated.

Is Doctor Doom An Evil Tony Stark Variant From Another Universe?
One of the most popular Marvel theories suggests that Doctor Doom is actually a version of Tony Stark from another universe. Instead of becoming Iron Man, this Tony may have followed a darker path and eventually taken the identity of Victor von Doom. As the MCU has already established that different characters can exist across the multiverse, this opens the possibility that another Tony Stark could have lived a completely different life.
Since both Stark and Doom are brilliant inventors who rely on advanced technology, fans believe their similarities may hold deeper meaning. However, the trailers for Avengers: Doomsday have introduced a complication. Comic-Con’s footage shows that Doom comes from the Fantastic Four’s universe and Sue Storm already knows him.
This suggests that Doctor Doom already has a history and identity different from Tony Stark, who lived on Earth-616.
Could Doctor Doom Have Stolen Tony Stark’s Body?
There is also another possibility that supports the idea. That is, Doom could genuinely be Victor Von Doom but share Tony’s appearance because of the multiverse. After all, we have already seen Chris Evans as both Steve Rogers and Johnny Storm.
Another major theory has a stronger connection to Marvel Comics. Rather than being an evil Tony Stark, Doctor Doom could have stolen Tony’s body. This idea comes from the 2010 comic What If? Iron Man: Demon in an Armor. In this, we have already seen Doom and Tony become college roommates.
However, Victor tricks Tony into participating in an experiment that transfers their minds into each other’s bodies. Eventually, Victor takes over Tony’s wealthy life while Tony finds himself trapped in Victor’s body. Their lives eventually take completely different directions. And now, fans believe, Avengers: Doomsday could borrow this concept without copying the entire comic.
