Visionquest viewers would know that the show has introduced several AI characters, but none of them has a history like Jim Hammond. Also known as the Human Torch, Hammond is one of Marvel’s oldest heroes. And now, his arrival in the Disney series has revealed an important connection to Vision’s creation.

The character’s importance became clear in Episode 7 of Visionquest and in a Marvel poster, which features a silhouette engulfed in flames on a dark city street. The same image has been shown in Vision’s mindspace, echoing the words, “I stood in the fire of myself, and I let it consume me.”

But Jim Hammond is not like Jarvis or Friday. In fact, Hammond’s comic book history connects him directly to Vision’s physical creation.

Who Really Is Jim Hammond In Visionquest Aka The Human Torch?

Jim Hammond first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. Unlike most Marvel superheroes, Hammond was not born human. In fact, he was created by scientist Dr. Phineas T. Horton as a synthetic man. But a flaw in the photoelectric solar cells covering his body, known as Horton Cells, caused him to burst into flames whenever his skin came into contact with oxygen.

Although his powers initially seemed like a problem, Hammond eventually learned to control the flames and became a superhero. Even during World War II, he fought alongside Captain America, Bucky Barnes, and Namor as a founding member of the Invaders.

But Hammond’s connection to Vision becomes more evident in The Avengers #57, where Ultron creates Vision, using Hammond as the foundation for his body. This establishes a direct connection between Hammond and Vision decades before Visionquest.

However, the Disney series takes that relationship in a different direction. The first clue about Hammond appears in Episode 2 of Visionquest, when Jarvis warns Vision about the dangers of human emotions, describing them as beautiful yet rash and self-destructive. Then, it ends with a hint that someone understood it better than anyone else.

At that moment, the camera rolls towards the painting of the burning man. Soon, episodes 3 and 4 finally revealed the mystery behind the image. The old Stark files identified Dr. Phineas T. Horton and his creation, JIM, which is the foundation for every sentient artificial intelligence that followed in the MCU. That means its original framework became the basis for JARVIS and other AI systems.

However, episode 7 finally revealed the tragedy behind his creation. The tragic story finally explains the burning man imagery that had appeared throughout the series.
