Jon Bernthal has always been known for playing tough and violent characters, and after watching him in Marvel’s The Punisher, we have no doubt about that. But before Marvel and The Walking Dead made Bernthal famous, he starred in a role you’d never expect.
Almost 20 years ago, he appeared in a sitcom as a charming, lazy man who struggled with relationships. It was the story of eight former elementary school classmates who reunited after 20 years, only to find themselves caught up in new friendships and complicated relationships.
Bernthal played Duncan Carmello, a working-class contractor who still lived with his mother and had feelings for his high school girlfriend. Although CBS canceled the sitcom in May 2007 after one season, the role became an important stepping stone in Bernthal’s career.

Jon Bernthal Played A Romantic And Funny Character in The Class
The story of Class begins with Ethan Haas, who organizes an engagement party for his girlfriend. Since he has known his girlfriend since elementary school, he also invites his classmates. But things go haywire when Joanne breaks up with him in front of everyone. The breakup brings eight 28-year-olds together.
Benthral’s character, Duncan Carmello, is a lazy contractor who still lives with his mother and hasn’t yet moved on from his high school breakup. When he meets her at the party, he thinks their relationship can revive again.
But things take a complicated turn when The Walking Dead star finds out that Nicole is unhappily married. Duncan and Nicole soon become the show’s OG couple. There are awkward moments as Duncan tries to win her over, but the one-night stand ends up complicating things.
How The Class Influenced Benthral’s Later Roles?
Unlike Benthral’s present characters, Duncan is cute and funny, and sometimes makes poor decisions. Although Duncan seems very different from Jon Benthral, the two share some surprising similarities. Even though Duncan is soft-spoken and cute, he’s a working-class man, which shows his tougher side.
If you have seen Benthral in Fury, We Own This City, and The Accountant as a hardworking man, you’ll understand the similarities. And Duncan’s emotional side is also reflected later in The Walking Dead, when we see how strongly his actions are connected to his feelings for Lori Grimes.
Despite running only for 19 episodes, The Class really helped Jon Benthral take the first step towards his successful career as The Punisher.
