Well, after a dinner with director Will Gluck and co-star Justin Timberlake, they reworked it—and the rest is rom-com history. The Black Swan star admitted, “When I got the script, it was very dated, but I knew it made for a funny movie.” Talk about a formidable first impression. But Mila Kunis saw potential, so she sat down with Gluck and Timberlake to hash out the details.
The three of them realized they were on the same page over a meal (because the best ideas are born over food). “We were able to workshop it, rewrite the script, and tailor the characters to what we feel our generation is like now,” Kunis explained. And just like that, the film we know and love was born—funny, fresh, and cheeky.
What’s even more incredible? The vibe on set was as collaborative as it gets. Kunis loved the teamwork that went into the film, alluding, “A lot of the time you go to work, have lunch by yourself, and then go back to work.” But Friends with Benefits wasn’t like that. She reminisced about how she, Justin, and Will would have dinner together, bonding over more than just the script. “Three months in, we still enjoy having dinner together, and we still go to dinner in Los Angeles,” Kunis said. That’s some real movie magic right there.

What started as a script that felt out-of-date became a feel-good favorite. And thanks to that dinner meeting, Friends with Benefits became a movie about love, laughter, and, of course, the art of rewriting. No wonder we loved this iconic movie!
