Actress Preeyal Gor is currently enjoying the success of her film Maharaj, where she played a very important character of Leelavati, who brings a very strong twist to the narrative of the film starring Junaid Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat. We recently talked to Preeyal about her career, the high, lows, about working in TV & then shifting to films.

Here are a few excerpts from Preeyal’s interview.

Getting Replaced Overnight

Preeyal started her career at the age of 15 with a TV show titled Raam Milaye Jodi. The actress recalls that she auditioned after her class 10th board exams and was selected for the part. However, she confessed that the crew did not treat her like a 15-year-old.

Talking to Koimoi, the actress recalled, “As soon as I started, I had a downfall because there was a lot of politics. It’s not that I didn’t make mistakes, but if a 15-year-old child is treated like a 15-year-old child, then it’s good. Like, if you play politics with a 15-year-old girl on set, making her work for 18-20 hours, (pauses) I didn’t know anything about the industry. So you know, I felt very sad when I was replaced overnight!”

Inhibitions With Maharaj

When Preeyal Gor signed Maharaj, she was not sure if her part would stay with the film or not. But it eventually turned into one of the strongest arcs of the film. The actress confessed, “Siddharth Malhotra was the producer for my show Icchapyaari Naagin. He offered me the role, and even then, I had this kind of insecurity that it’s a small character. You know, after making it so big, you are suddenly in just 3-4 scenes.”

Reaction After Maharaj Premiere

The actress continued, “In movies, it happens a lot that your roles get cut, scenes get cut. It’s not because somebody did bad acting; it just gets edited. From then till the release, my only wish was that my scenes would not be cut. When the movie came out, I came out of the premiere and held my head high, and I was like, oh my god, Leelavati is such a great character. No scenes were cut. I was very happy.”

Working With Prithviraj Sukumaran

Working in the Malayalam film titled Anarkali starring Prithviraj, Preeyal Gor recalled how she still gets love for the film. The actress said, “So, I had already done one Telugu film, and then this Malayalam film happened. Because I had little experience in the regional genre so, I always knew that Malayalam Cinema always makes artistic movies; they don’t make commercial movies. But I told my manager, I’m doing this.”

Stating how excited she was, the actress said, “Prithviraj is like Shah Rukh Khan in Malayalam. And I was like, there’s no chance I’m saying no to this film. Even if the budget is low, I don’t care. And trust me, that movie came out in 2015. It’s been 9 years now. But the amount of love that I still get, it’s amazing. It’s priceless for me.”

Working With Junaid Khan

Talking about working with Junaid Khan, Preeyal confessed that the Starkid does not have an ounce of starry aura around him. In fact, even Aamir Khan did not interfere during the film’s production. The actress said, “I felt Junaid was so focused with his work and his character. It took a lot of hard work for his character, his dialogue, and everything else. He was very focused on his work, and that was very inspiring. It was his first movie; he’s Aamir Khan’s son, but he doesn’t have the attitude that I’m a hero. There was nothing like that.”

Preeyal is looking for some more good projects, and we hope to see her on-screen more.
