Despite the strong reviews, the film recorded the second-lowest domestic debut for Laika Studios. It collected $12.3 million only on its three-day opening weekend in North America. On Monday, it added another $1.4 million, down 62.7% from Sunday. It is more than Coraline‘s first Monday gross, and the film’s domestic total after 4 days is $13.7 million. Alongside the international numbers, the film’s worldwide collection has hit the $16.6 million mark.

  • International – $2.9 million
  • Worldwide – $16.6 million

How much must the film earn to break even at the worldwide box office?

According to reports, Wildwood was made on a $100 million budget, which makes it a high-budget project. It has been in the making for years, and this is Laika’s first original movie in 7 years. The stop-motion animation thus needs to earn major numbers at the worldwide box office. It therefore needs to earn more to get near the break-even target.

Based on the industry’s 2.5x rule, the stop-motion animation Wildwood must earn around $250 million at the box office to break even and become profitable. The film is more than $233 million short of reaching the break-even point worldwide. Therefore, the stop-motion animation needs a 1309% jump worldwide to break even and become profitable. It is too early to say anything and could end up being a sleeper hit.

What is the film about?

The film follows Prue (Lee) and her classmate Curtis (Tremblay) as they venture into an enchanted forest to find her kidnapped infant brother, Mac. Along the way, they discover a manor and meet Alexandra (Mulligan), a mysterious woman who has lost her son and warns them of an impending war. Wildwood was released on October 23.
