When a show says ‘from the makers of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’, you undoubtedly put your faith in it. That is exactly what comes to mind while watching the trailer of Chumbak. The upcoming family comedy series brings together five families who are neighbors and whose lives are intertwined.
The trailer of the upcoming series has been released and gives a glimpse into the chaotic lives of five families. The show promises to explore everyday situations that arise when neighbors know each other a little too well. The trailer introduces us to a mix of characters with quirky traits you might not expect.
Throughout the trailer, we can see that Arjun Bijlani and Helly Shah play Mickey and Twinkle Oberoi, a romantic couple who are in their own world but cannot stay that way for long because of meddling neighbors. Sumeet Raghavan and Sandeepa Dhar play a couple who have an issue with the husband being more feminine. Deven Bhojani and Neena Gupta are at the center of the story as they play Rajni and Kuku Merchant, who are struggling in their marriage. The story takes a turn when Neena’s Rajni files for divorce from Kuku, setting off a domino effect on the marriages of others in the neighborhood.

The trailer looks like all fun, with plenty of quirky characters and traits. But I hope the reliance on humor is not entirely on the characters’ quirkiness, but also on the writing. While the makers of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi are known for writing standout characters, times have changed, and quirkiness alone cannot elicit humor. The trailer seems light-hearted, but it does not make you burst out laughing. This is where the writing needs to do the heavy lifting.
The series comes from Hats Off Production, the banner behind popular comedies such as Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi. It is written and directed by Aatish Kapadia and produced by Jamnadas (JD) Majethia and Kapadia.
