David Ayer is a very strange case of a director; his output might be one of the most inconsistent in all of Hollywood, with true gems like Training Day, and End of Watch, along with some other that are not so good; and yet, he is a passionate filmmaker and well worth checking out, you never know if he is going to come a with gem under his sleeve, and in this case, while not really a gem, Ayer arrives with a film that will make a ton of people cry, and just for that emotional ride, it will be good enough.
Heart Of The Beast Movie Review: Script Analysis
Cameron Alexander wrote the script that became one of the most sought after screenplays in the industry, even ending up in the famous Black List, where all the “best screenplays” that have not been produced are listed, so it wasn’t surprising when Brad Pitt picked the script up for a personal project, with David Ayer coming along as director, and while the result doesn’t live up to the potential of a Black List script, it is good enough to be entertaining, and emotional.
Emotional is the key word, because in the face of a movie that has only two major characters, a man and his dog, well, that is one of the most effective relationships where to extract emotional reactions, as dogs as become one of the most iconic symbols of humanity and our relationship with nature throughout human history.
What Cameron does here also tries to get the veteran effect in the mix, meaning our main character is a veteran, a faction of people who sometimes don’t get the best outcome out of life, which is sad, especially after having sacrificed so much in the defense of their nation, family, friends, and often, their own sanity.
The depictions of all these themes are right there, and while it is nice to have them, for some reason, they are not developed as they should have, and also when they do appear, they are a bit too on the nose, and because I haven’t read the original script, I cannot say if this is Cameron’s or Ayer’s fault, but a bit of sophistication would have come a long way, but as it is, the story feels like it is coming out of a Hallmark TV movie, raw but too simple, especially when we know there are so many layers to everything we see on the screen.
Heart Of The Beast Movie Review: Star Performance
Brad Pitt is one of the greats; he has nothing to prove. His level of charisma and his ability to portray emotion are exceptional, so there is really nothing else to say here about him. However, Pitt is not the real star of the movie, that title goes to Uber, the dog, who plays Odin, the true protagonist of the movie.
Uber is quite an amazing actor, in all the meaning of the word; the dog can basically emote in ways many human actors cannot, and this might sound ridiculous or an exaggeration, but it is true, and anyone who sees the movie will tell you the same. Uber is basically in the entire movie, and we follow the story mostly through his perspective. Even more than Pitt’s character, it is a true achievement for Uber’s training team, for sure.

Heart Of The Beast Movie Review: Direction, Music
This is where the film falls apart a bit, as Ayer is not really a director who knows how to get into the calmest part of the cinematic experience; his work often goes the opposite way, which is why it is nice to see him doing something new and different for him, but at the same time, you can feel that maybe another director with different sensibilities would have been better for the material.
The cinematography is truly effective, though, and it shows the beauty of the scenery in the Alaskan territory, a frontier that has always been fascinating for me in one way or another, and so, in this movie, it really takes you to nice places, but it is a shame that Ayer drops the ball by giving the film a stumbling pace, and not enough atmosphere so that the events feel meaningful instead of just a series of scenes one after the other.
Heart Of The Beast Movie Review: The Last Word
Heart of the Beast is not a bad film, but it is also not amazing; it is a nice experience, a very emotional one, really, but maybe not a full ticket experience at the theater unless you are a huge Brad Pitt fan or a huge dog fan, and for those two audiences, the film will deliver, but for others it might be something that is better watched at home.
