Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are officially returning as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. However, their comebacks have raised an interesting question for the fandom. Since the upcoming prequel takes place 25 years before Katniss and Peeta’s story begins, how will the two characters fit into the story?

While the studio has remained tight-lipped about their appearance in the prequel, Suzanne Collins’ original novel offers a possible answer. Though the book and the prequel’s focus will be on Haymitch’s experiences, there’s a twist that will make space for Katniss and Peeta to fit in.

For the non-book reader club, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping doesn’t end with Haymitch’s victory. In fact, the novel will include an emotional scene after the events of Mockingjay that will connect his story back to Katniss and Peeta.

How Does The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Bring Katniss and Peeta Into Haymitch’s Story?

Although most of the story of Sunrise on the Reaping takes place more than two decades ago, the original Hunger Games trilogy’s epilogue jumps forward to the period following President Snow’s downfall. At this point, the Hunger Games is over, and Haymitch has already fulfilled a promise he once made to his lost love, Lenore Dove.

As viewers would know, Lenore was always an important part of Haymitch’s life before President Snow’s evil actions separated them. But that didn’t stop him from fulfilling his promise, even though it took much longer. Even years after her death, Lenore remains an important part of his life, and he still sees visions of her.

During one such vision, Haymitch explains that Lenore has told him he cannot join her yet because he still has people who need him. This already makes it clear how important Katniss and Peeta are to Haymitch.

Why Katniss and Peeta’s Return Could Give Haymitch A More Emotional Ending?

It is during the epilogue that we learn that Katniss and Peeta are working on a memorial book to remember those who lost their lives. Even though Haymitch initially refuses to participate, he eventually begins sharing memories of the people he loved and lost. This is where the prequel’s connection to the original trilogy becomes important.

In the final moments of The Hunger Games prequel, Haymitch finally gets what he has craved for his whole life: peace. After learning about Lenore, Katniss brings Haymitch goose eggs to hatch, and Peeta builds an incubator to raise the goslings.

To Haymitch, raising the goslings symbolizes Lenore’s memories living on, while Katniss and Peeta finally get a chance to do something good for their mentor. If the upcoming prequel follows the novel religiously, this is how Katniss and Peeta will fit into the story.
