The Dog Stars is the upcoming movie by Ridley Scott, which features Jacob Elordi in a leading role. The film’s world premiere was held in London, and critics are already sharing their views on X. It has an excellent star cast, but there is not much buzz around the film, maybe due to a lack of promotion. But if people like it, it will be a box-office success. The post-apocalyptic science fiction is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Peter Heller. The film features Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce. It will be released in North America next weekend. It is the second Elordi release this year, after Wuthering Heights.
The Dog Stars’ early reviews on X [formerly Twitter]
Several critics have shared their opinions and reviews of The Dog Stars on the social media platform X [formerly Twitter]. Journalist Gavin Spoors wrote, “#TheDogStars took me by surprise. Ridley Scott has proven yet again that his finger is on the pulse when it comes to current themes. A warm, human, post-apocalyptic drama about the need for community. Slow, but consistently engaging, with smart editing.”

Another critic Patrick said, “THE DOG STARS is soothing and gruelling. A western set at the end of the world with a big heart. Some intense FURY ROAD energy mixed with quiet campfires under the stars. Acoustic guitars, Josh Brolin smoking cigars, and a dog. Ridley Scott knows what we want.”
Another critic, Phil Roberts, said, “Ridley Scott’s #TheDogStars is a surprisingly humble and emotionally weighted change of pace for the director. With its impressive cinematography, endless desolation and magnetic performances from Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin, it’s an impressive post-apocalyptic ride.”
“Really enjoyed The Dog Stars. It’s quiet and contemplative, which I didn’t expect, with unexpected moments of ferocity and violence. The score is particularly beautiful, the cast is excellent, and I think Ridley Scott has created something unique. And there’s a wonderful dog!” wrote film lover Liz Slade.
Tom Davidson said, “Far better than I expected (but I had low expectations). Ridley is largely on autopilot, but some exciting sequences nonetheless. A surprisingly optimistic look at a post-apocalyptic world.”
Film Focus’ Danny B said, “One Post-Apocalyptic Cliché After Another. Some visceral action beats and strong performances, but barely anything stands out in an undercooked outing with little to differentiate it from countless films of this genre. Feels like a third act is MIA.”
What is the film about?
The story follows Hig, a former civilian pilot, and Bangley, a hardened former Marine, as they navigate a world devastated by a flu pandemic that has nearly wiped out humanity. Together, they confront external threats while holding on to the hope of finding a better life beyond their current home. The Dog Stars will be released on August 28.
