Some movies become classics the moment they hit the theaters. Others need years, or maybe a new generation and a little help from the internet, to find their audience. Mike Myers’ The Cat in the Hat belongs to the second genre.

When the film arrived in November 2003, it was harshly dissected by critics. They found its humor inappropriate, its characters unsettling, and Dr. Seuss’s story almost unrecognizable. What was supposed to be a fun family adventure quickly became one of Hollywood’s most infamous adaptations.

But more than two decades later, something unexpected happened. The very things that made The Cat in the Hat so unpopular in 2003 are now winning over the Gen Z audience. Especially with Bill Hader’s new animated adaptation arriving on November 6, 2026, the OG film is enjoying new attention online. So, how did the magic happen?

Why Was Mike Myers’ The Cat in the Hat Hated So Much?

During the 2003 release of The Cat in the Hat, critics struggled to understand how the creators turned a children’s book into such a bizarre movie. The movie didn’t retain the playful innocence of the original characters; instead, it was replaced by adult humor and strange visuals.

Even Mike Myers’ performance was harshly criticized for being cold and dark. According to the critics, Thing 1 and Thing 2 also appeared very creepy.

The criticism proved a public embarrassment when the movie received a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Excuse for an Actual Movie, while Myers’ Cat won the Stinkers Bad Movie Award for Most Annoying Non-Human Character. The backlash grew so much that the director, Bo Welch, never took the chance to direct another movie.

Surprisingly, for the Gen Z audience, The Cat in the Hat is no longer a failed adaptation. Instead, they love the ridiculous dialogue, chaotic storytelling, and the dark humor. In fact, clips from the movie have also become very popular on social media. According to most viewers, part of the movie’s popularity lies in how it is watched as an adult.

Similar to the audience, director Bo Welch never rejected the movie because he found its unusual approach quite interesting. Despite the criticism, he never really doubted his decision to cast Myers. Speaking to SYFY in 2023, Welch defended how Mike Myers gave the cat an unexpected New York personality rather than the one we’re used to imagining.

So, it seems like The Cat in the Hat was a great movie all along; it just needed the right audience.
