The Ranveer Singh starrer sports biographical drama 83 was released on December 24, 2021 with a lot of expectations. The movie revolved around the Indian Cricket Team’s historic win at the 1983 World Cup under former Indian skipper Kapil Dev. Ranveer stepped into the shoes of Dev wherein his performance and uncanny resemblance to the cricket legend was also lauded. However, this did not save the movie from emerging as a major box office dud.

Mounted at an ambitious budget of more than 200 crore, the Ranveer Singh starrer opened at 12.64 crore. The number was not bad but given the scale of the project, it was definitely expected to have an opening above the 15 crore bracket. By its first weekend, the film remained below the 50 crore bracket wherein it amassed 47 crores. The film earned around 71.41 crore by its first week. When it was expected that the collections would witness a growth due to some positive word of mouth, the numbers failed to witness a spike. The sports biographical drama ended its theatrical run at 102 crore. The film emerged with a flop verdict since it was unable to recover its massive budget.

83’s box office disaster was truly unfortunate. The movie had a subject which holds still special and nostalgic for all the Indian cricket fans. The stellar cast members were lauded to resemble all of the cricket stalwarts that they were representing. The movie also had the Christmas release which should have worked favorably for it. But alas! None of it seemed to have worked.

83 was directed by Kabir Khan. Apart from Ranveer Singh, the movie also starred Deepika Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem and others. Deepika was also the producer of the film.
