Before Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated Gladiator 2 finally hits the big screen, it’s the perfect time to reminisce about the 2000 Gladiator and take a trip down memory lane to revisit the first movie’s events. Although there’s still a month before Gladiator 2 arrives in theaters on November 22, the overwhelmingly positive first reactions make the wait all the more worthwhile.
Gladiator followed Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who Commodus, the power-hungry son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, betrayed. When Marcus calls Maximus his successor, Commodus kills his father and orders Maximus’ execution. Although Maximus escapes his death, he returns to his home only to find his family brutally killed by Commodus’ men. He is then captured and enslaved, becoming a gladiator as he rises to fame in the arena. Maximus defeats Commodus in a single combat in the showdown and dies, securing a restoration of power for the Senate.
