Shujaat Husain Khan, world renowned sitarist and Grammy Award nominee, has for the first time in his career scored music for a Bollywood film, Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta. His father, Ustad Vilayat Khan, had also composed music for one film – Satyajit Ray’s Jalsaghar (Bengali). Besides composing the music in Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta, Shujaat Husain Khan has also lent his voice to one song (Ae khuda). The sitarist says that he had in the past too been approached to score music for films but he had to decline every offer as filmmakers invariably wanted him to compose tunes for item numbers.
However, Pravesh Bhardwaj, the director of Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta, told the celebrated music composer that he would like the music of his film to belong to his (Bhardwaj’s) father’s record collection. At this, Shujaat Khan gave a hearty laugh and agreed to come on board. The lyrics for the songs have been written by Amitabh Varma who had also penned the songs for Anurag Basu’s Metro. Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta stars Aruna Shields (of Prince fame) and Prashant Narayanan. It is scheduled for release on 25th June.
