The rivalry between Victor Newman and Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless is a classic. The characters have been enemies for decades, and to this day, they continue to plot against one another onscreen. But the case wasn’t so different for the actors offscreen, either, once upon a time.
Eric Braeden, who plays Victor, and Peter Bergman, who portrays Jack, did not get along when the latter joined the soap opera in 1989. Things got so ugly that the two even got involved in a physical fight while on set. Decades later, the two have moved past it, but here’s what happened back then.
The Young & The Restless: Peter Bergman & Eric Braeden Got Into A Heated On-Set Fight
Back in 1989, Peter replaced Terry Lester and stepped into the role of Jack. The friction between them escalated so much that in 1991, they got into a physical fight on-set. But eventually, they decided that their animosity was not good for the environment off-screen but good for the rivalry on-screen.

This is why they decided to channel it in their scenes, resulting in some iconic moments between Victor and Jack. Working together for years eventually made them good friends, and the two have looked back on the incident from a new perspective since. “Eric Braeden was a big Terry Lester fan, so his wasn’t the warmest welcome,” Peter told Entertainment Weekly in 2009.
He told Michael Fairman that he and Eric had a number of problems when he joined the soap opera, and they culminated in an ugly fight that should never have happened. Peter added that he could have done without it in his life. In February 2017, Eric released his memoir titled I’ll Be Damned: How My Young and Restless Life Led Me to America’s #1 Daytime Drama.
The daytime star told Soap Opera Digest that he addressed the incident in his book because it was such a big deal at the time and something he wished could have been avoided. His goal was “to show how it is possible to get beyond something like that and develop enormous respect.”
Eric shared that he and Peter have different ways of approaching work, but they respect each other a lot now after putting everything behind them. “We have nothing but respect for each other, but it took a while to get to that point,” he admitted regarding how things changed between them over time.
