Since the start of the lockdown, nothing seems to be going the right way for US TV host Ellen DeGeneres. Recently, her former staff members of The Ellen Show called out Ellen and her toxic work culture. Now we hear, British comedian James Corden may be the first in line to replace Ellen DeGeneres if she exits her talk show.
The former staffers of Ellen’s show alleged that senior executives at the show groped and kissed employees – and even asked one of them for oral sex. Following to the same, Warner Bros have led to an investigation into the matter.
Now insiders at the show’s network NBC claim that Corden has long been considered the successor to DeGeneres even before the scandal hit the ‘seemingly’ clean host.
James Corden, who hails from the UK, is known for creating and starring in the sitcom Gavin and Stacey. He currently hosts The Late Late Show on rival network CBS under a contract that expires in 2022.
According to The Sun, he is a favourite of British NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy. Paul is part of the executive team overseeing the probes on the claims against The Ellen DeGeneres Show as well as deciding on the future of the long-running daytime hit series.
The Brit telly boss is a huge fan of James Corden and has him high on his wanted list for talent and a long term replacement for Ellen, a source told The Sun. An insider said, “This issue has fast-tracked everything and made everyone look at the future today. James Corden was being eyed for Ellen’s job in the long term before any of this came to light.”
The source continued, “Now this shocking new development places a spotlight on the next step. James and his team have been trailblazers in modern TV, taking the once considered graveyard chat show slot into a cutting edge format with huge online, social media and global recognition. In five years he went from unknown to A-list star and creative. Currently, his CBS deal is only contracted until 2022 after he turned down a five-year deal.”
The insider further added, “Paul is a huge fan of what James does on screen. He already has a huge devoted audience, global appeal and is loved by Hollywood. Replacing Ellen was always going to be a tough challenge, but he is a natural fit and easy transition. James would freshen up daytime and with a free hand would be allowed to build a new afternoon era.”
On Saturday, DailyMail reported that Ellen DeGeneres plans to walk away from her talk show empire. The insider told them, “She feels like she can’t go on and the only way to recover from her personal brand is to shut down the show.”
However, the Executive Producer of the talk show, Andy Lassner, has denied DeGeneres plans to quit.
