Adultery Plot

Tom Kirkman, a GP and charity worker, and his wife Hannah, share little with Beth and Neil Brookes, a working-class couple. Jess is Tom’s 15-year-old daughter, and she is dating Ollie, Beth’s son. Tom and Beth meet by chance, feel an instant pull, and begin an affair behind their spouses’ backs, even though their children are a couple. The secret unravels when Jess finds out, and the fallout is messy: Jess lies about being pregnant to try to stop them, Beth leaves Neil, Hannah throws Tom out, and Jess and Ollie split up.

How Does Tom And Beth’s Affair Come To Light?

In the finale, Jess pleads with Beth to stop, promising secrecy if she does, but Beth says she can’t. Jess then claims to be pregnant, hoping to break them up, and it later emerges that this was a lie told to get attention and help.

After they agree to confess, Beth tells Neil their marriage is finished, saying she has changed and he hasn’t noticed. Tom backs out of telling Hannah, but Neil storms to the Kirkman house; the truth comes out. Hannah orders Tom to leave. Hannah’s own past, in which she found out her mother had lied about her father’s identity, makes her unwilling to subject her children to more secrets.

Do Tom And Beth Stay Together At The End?

They do, but they live in separate homes so their children can stay with them. But the question is whether it can last without the secrecy that fed it. Tom confesses he misses his family and feels isolated, and Beth reminds him that everyday life will never feel as perfect as an affair. He also has to face having become a cheating husband like his father and brother.

The show declines to judge Tom and Beth, leaving viewers to decide whether the damage was worth it. Jess and Ollie have split up in the aftermath, though feelings remain.
