Three films in a year might seem like a lot of Suriya, but the actor has made sure that there is something different to look forward to in each of them. His latest outing, Jithu Madhavan’s Scene, presents him in a completely different avatar compared to his previous two releases. While Suriya remains the hero and the center of attention, his character brings a certain novelty to the screen. Directed by the filmmaker behind the Malayalam hit Aavesham, Scene has a similar sense of quirkiness, an interesting plot, and a bunch of eccentric characters who make this crime-comedy-drama an absolute riot.

Scene Movie Review: Script Analysis
The story centers around Crime Branch inspector Inbaraj (Suriya). He wants to resign from his job, but his boss won’t accept it because he’s exceptional at what he does. During this time, he comes across a case. Now, what makes the case interesting is that the murderer is imitating a popular serial killer whom Inbaraj had already put behind bars. This raises some suspicion around Inbaraj and the case he had previously solved. He dives into the new case to catch the murderer and prove that he is a copycat killer.
Nazriya Nazim plays Maya, Suriya’s house help in the film, while Naslen stars as Eeswaran, the murderer. Suriya’s character has to team up with an unlikely group to crack this smart case. Will he be successful? Why is Naslen’s character imitating a renowned serial killer? Why is Nazriya just a house help? All this and more gets answered in the film.
Scene Movie Review: Star Performance
Suriya‘s Inbaraj is a very well-written character. He seems pretty entitled and arrogant at first, until we are exposed to the reason behind his quirks. Even at 51, the actor manages to play characters belonging to different age groups. He also needs to be quite agile in the film and delivers well in the action sequences.
Nazriya Nazim is the first heroine in a Jithu Madhavan film. She is no damsel in distress, but neither is she as heroic as Suriya. She often underplays her skills and puts them to the test only when needed. Nazriya is an actress who knows how to light up every frame she is in, and Scene is no different. Naslen, as we all know, plays the antagonist in the film. He has matured as an actor and plays the role of an intelligent, passionate murderer.
The supporting cast of the film, including Anandraj, Lal, Raj Priyan, Gajaraj, and Suresh Mathiyalagan, adds to the film’s madness.

Scene Movie Review: Direction, Music
Scene’s plot is not something that is new or unheard of. However, it is Jithu Madhavan’s approach and treatment of the film that makes this ride an absolute riot. Jithu also serves as the film’s writer. From Inbaraj and Maya to Eeswaran, every character has a quirk that adds to the film’s fun. Even a famed serial killer who is now behind bars (played by a top Mollywood actor) has a very quirky and interesting personality.
The film has some good humor moments that hit their peak and drop instantly. The film’s strength definitely lies in its characters and subplots. It does not entirely focus on the cat-and-mouse chase between Inbaraj and Eeswaran. Sure, it would have been a more intense and thrilling film if it had been centered solely on the two. But that’s where Jithu Madhavan lets his sensibilities as a filmmaker shine. He wants to look at the worlds around Inbaraj and Eeswaran and how vital a role they play in shaping the hero image Inbaraj projects or the supervillain persona Eeswaran projects.
For example, when multiple murders take place, a young man who becomes a circumstantial witness gets involved as a suspect. While he is not central to the film, his character is treated light-heartedly, and we also see the end of his arc. Such little side quests in the film just add to its entertainment value.
Coming to the technical aspects, the film has been shot beautifully by cinematographers Vineeth Augustian, Unni Palode and Alexander Zolotarev. There are several stylized sequences in the film that are very much in sync with its tone.
Sushin Shyam has composed the music for the film, and it is as quirky and fun as the characters. His work especially shines in the climax, when we get a face-off between Suriya and Naslen. His music also helps elevate the little romantic moments between Suriya and Nazriya‘s characters.

Scene Movie Review: The Last Word
Jithu Madhavan and his team set out to make an entertaining film, and they do just that. There is no preaching or life lessons here, just pure entertainment. The film does not provide many highs or wow moments that are usually associated with commercial films, but that is also because it maintains its tone throughout and refuses to let go of its grip on the audience.
The film has many moments that had the potential to become massive high points, such as Nazriya’s action sequence, some of the murders committed by Naslen’s character or Suriya’s moments of epiphany. These could have been more stylized for elevation, but Jithu largely stays true to the characters and does not switch up or dial down their personalities for the sake of elevation. And that honestly works well. Despite the quirks of the characters, the film packs a punch with its authenticity and stays true to its plot and characters.
