What does Diwali mean to you? For those who live with their parents, it is all about planning meals, special pooja, and a lot of celebration! For those of us living away from our parents, it involves the hassle of booking tickets home, reaching home, reuniting with family, fun, laughter, happiness, and repeating all of the above! Netflix decided to wrap you in the same warmth in the pre-Diwali season with its simple, heart-touching family drama, Meethe Mein Kya Hai!?
Usually, every Indian family has that one festival where the delicacies disappear quickly, the relatives overstay, and at least one uncomfortable question gets asked over chai. This family drama takes this familiar chaos and puts it on screen with a quiet confidence. It doesn’t shout, and it doesn’t scheme. It just lets a family be a family, and that makes it a pleasant, if not perfect, Diwali watch.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai Movie Review: Script Analysis
Written and directed by debutante Radhika Bansal, Meethe Mein Kya Hai centers around the multi-generational Agarwal family coming together in Lucknow to celebrate the four days of Diwali. At the heart of the narrative is Jai (Ritwik Bhowmik), a young architect still quietly grappling with deep-seated grief two years after the sudden passing of his wife. Hoping to pull him out of his shell, his mother, Amrita (Ayesha Raza Mishra), tries to push him toward an arranged marriage while simultaneously attempting to convince his resilient grandmother (Rohini Hattangadi) to move out of her independent ancestral home.
But as siblings arrive and unannounced life updates get dropped into the festive mix, long-standing grievances, hidden secrets, and generational friction spill out onto the dining table.
Meethe Mein Kya Hai Movie Review: Star Performance
The strongest pillar of Meethe Mein Kya Hai is its stellar ensemble cast, who bring lived-in authenticity to every family interaction. Ritwik Bhowmik delivers a remarkably restrained, emotionally grounded performance as Jai. He balances quiet grief with genuine warmth, avoiding melodramatic tropes so his healing journey feels earned.
Rohini Hattangadi is a delight as the matriarch, playing the role with the kind of authority and warmth that only a veteran can. She even gets one of the funniest moments when she shares news of Sana’s wedding like it’s an afterthought. She is the absolute soul of the film. With her quiet dignity, poise, and subtle humor, she holds the family and the movie together seamlessly. Ayesha Raza Mishra nails the chaotic, anxious energy of a concerned mother. Young Shivika Rishi is a total delight as the neighborly catalyst for Jai’s emotional breakthrough, while Dalai and Vikram Bakshi lend strong support during the film’s second-half family confrontations.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai Movie Review: Direction, Music
Radhika Bansal makes sure that the relatable slice-of-life aesthetic works for the audience. The film captures the authentic rhythm of Indian festive reunions – where banter, passive-aggressive remarks, genuine affection, and sweet moments exist side-by-side. The restrained emotional arc between Jai and his Nani becomes the highest point of the show! It will surely remind you of your Dadi and Nani. Radhika exhibits great maturity by letting silent pauses do the heavy lifting rather than over-explaining every emotional turning point.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai Movie Review: The Last Word
Here’s where the writing does something interesting. Most Diwali-reunion films would blow these ingredients up into a full-blown shouting match. This one sets up the fight and then calmly steps away to look at the people instead. You keep waiting for the property war that never fully arrives, and the film is clearly fine with your disappointment.
But the screenplay isn’t flawless. The film introduces its main conflict quickly but loses pace in the middle, and it’s the humor and one-liners that rescue it whenever it starts to sag. Yes, some tracks are underwritten, the middle drags in places, and the ending won’t shock anyone. Nani is built up as someone the whole family fears, only to turn out to be one of the most open-minded people in the house, which feels unnecessary. The film also doesn’t go too deep into any stakes, and a lot of the family-drama beats will feel familiar. If last year’s Greater Kalesh was your jam, this will feel like a cousin to it.
Meethe Mein Kya Hai doesn’t aim to reinvent the wheel of family dramedies, nor does it rely on loud theatrical twists. Instead, it offers a sweet, comforting, and bittersweet reflection on grief, acceptance, and the messy beauty of family dynamics during the holidays. Supported by solid performances from Ritwik Bhowmik and Rohini Hattangadi, it serves as a delightful festive watch for sure!
