Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy has always walked a fine line between staying faithful to Frank Herbert’s novels and making some on-screen changes. While the first two Dune films largely stayed true to the books, Dune 3 marks one of Villeneuve’s biggest career risks.
The upcoming film, starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani, is primarily based on Dune: Messiah. But according to reports, Villeneuve will also introduce elements of Children of Dune into the story.
That makes it clear that Dune 3’s story won’t stay focused only on Paul. Instead, it will also explore what happens to his family after nearly two decades of Dune: Part Two. But this change is only the beginning. The cast of Dune has revealed that the third movie is taking major departures from the books.

Why Dune 3 Is Moving Beyond Dune: Messiah?
One of the most important decisions Denis Villeneuve has made is regarding the timeline. In Dune: Messiah, the events take place 12 years after Paul becomes Emperor. But in the upcoming movie, the time gap is 19 years. The most obvious reason behind the gap is Paul and Chani’s children, Ghanima and Leto II. In the movie, they are teenagers who live and interact only with Chani.
The trailer has already raised questions about their demographics, and even their appearances have sparked speculation about whether the children possess the same powers mentioned in the books. Besides accommodating the children, the longer time jump also gives Paul’s reign more time. It’ll be interesting to see what changes he made in the galaxy and what conspiracies are going on against him.
Villeneuve is also altering a small action sequence from Dune: Messiah and taking it to the next level. In the novel, the Spacing Guild’s involvement in the conspiracy against Paul includes a plan to steal a sandworm from Arrakis to obtain its own supply of spice. The idea is very brief.
But in the trailers, we have already seen Paul’s enemies attempting to capture a giant sandworm. As sandworms have been quite a spectacle throughout the franchise, the movie is just bringing another full-circle moment.
Chani’s New Role Could Change Paul’s Ending
We have seen one of the biggest transformations in Chani in Villeneuve’s adaptation. In Herbert’s books, we have seen Chani remaining loyal to Paul even after he marries Princess Irulan. But Villeneuve is taking their relationship in the opposite direction. The trailers reveal that Chani is somehow involved in the conspiracy to overthrow Paul. That means she is now working with Scytale, aka Robert Pattinson, and other opponents.
Apart from that, Villeneuve also makes major changes to Chani’s fate. In the books, Chani is clearly struggling to get pregnant, and when she eventually does, she dies giving birth to her twins. But Villeneuve has already changed that outcome. In the trailers, we see Chani interacting with her teenage children; that means she survives.
Despite the significant changes from the books, the cast has expressed confidence in Villeneuve’s creative approach. So, let’s see how that turns out!
