Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility brings Jane Austen’s first novel back to the screen with Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood. Anyone who knows Ang Lee’s 1995 film will notice the ending is different this time.
Sense and Sensibility Plot Summary
After their father’s death, the Dashwood sisters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, and their mother are left penniless. The family’s estate passes entirely to their brother, whose pitiless wife Fanny quickly takes over the house. The women lean on the generosity of a distant cousin, Mrs. Jennings, and rent a small cottage in Devonshire.
Elinor quietly falls for Fanny’s brother Edward Ferrars, but his commitment to Lucy Steele keeps them apart. Marianne’s romance is louder. A slip in the sea leads to her meeting with Mr. Willoughby. He seems to return her feelings, only to deceive her. Heartbroken, Marianne makes herself ill, and a long walk in the pouring rain leaves her sick. Her mother rides through a storm to be at her side.

What Happens Between Elinor & Edward?
Edward leaves, believing he is bound to Lucy. Elinor then learns from Mrs. Jennings that Lucy has married Edward’s brother Robert instead, which means Edward is free to marry. Elinor runs after Edward, tells him she loves him, and the two kiss. They become engaged. It is the film’s most direct romantic payoff.
What Happens To Marianne?
Her ending is quieter. Colonel Brandon and Willoughby have a duel, and Marianne worries only about Brandon. Later, she hints that the two could have a future once she heals. There is no engagement and no proposal. The film lets Marianne recover first.
The Film Doesn’t Show Any Weddings
The 2026 version avoids the double-wedding sequence of the earlier film. Instead of ending on marriages, it ends on what the story is mostly about: the bond between the sisters. Their closeness is the film’s real constant.
Why Do Elinor and Marianne Have Different Endings?
One romance gets a clear resolution, and the other is given more time. Elinor, the restrained sister, finally says what she feels. Marianne, who has felt everything openly and recklessly, is allowed to slow down, and her feelings for Brandon are shown to be more patient than what she once felt for Willoughby.
What Does The Ending Mean?
The title’s two ideas end up in conversation with each other. By the end, each sister learns from the other that a happy life needs both sound judgment (sense) and life-loving exuberance (sensibility). Elinor learns to let herself be seen, and Marianne learns to be careful about whom she trusts. Neither has to give up what makes her herself, and both are better off for having shared the other’s way of seeing.
