The Alien franchise is one of the most influential series of all time. First released in 1979, the Alien movie introduced fans to Xenomorphs, which has become the widely accepted model of what an evil extraterrestrial being will look like. Since then, the film has spanned into an entire franchise, the latest of which is the Alien: Romulus movie. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the movie released in August 2024.

Made on a production budget of $80 Million, Romulus grossed more than $350 million worldwide. Director Alvarez has now become one of the most anticipated names in the genre, having already helmed films like Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe. Despite Romulus’ impressive box office performance and an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the director has shared a cautious update on the movie’s sequel.

Fede Alvarez Discusses The Future Of Alien: Romulus Franchise

In a recent interview with Gizmodo, Fede Alvarez shared that both he and the studio are eager to continue the story. “Well, I mean, we definitely want to do it. The studio wants to do it. I want to do it,” Alvarez said. However, they are currently exploring ideas. He and his co-writer, Rodo Sayagues, are working on getting the story ahead. The director warned against rushing into a sequel simply due to the commercial success of the first movie, stating, “Making a sequel just because the first one is a big hit is always a recipe for disaster.”

He said that they want to take their time with the production of the movie. “We have some ideas, but it’s not until we find something that we go ‘Ok, that is a movie worth making’ that we really embark on it. So that’s the process we are in right now, trying to find a story that is worthy of everyone’s time and is worthy of the title.”

The Alien franchise has experienced its ups and downs at the box office. However, Romulus stood out as one of the more successful installments in recent years. Further, the TV show Alien: Earth is set to expand the franchise’s lore. Whether or not Alvarez directs the next film, fans can expect the saga to continue evolving.
