As the norm goes, marriage is supposed to be a lifelong promise of companionship and happiness. But what happens when the institution itself becomes one of the biggest obstacles to those promises? The darkly comic fantasy ‘Wicker’, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Olivia Colman, explores a similar idea of marriage and reveals one of its wonderfully bizarre sides.
The story begins with a lonely fisherwoman who finds love in one of the most unexpected places: wicker. Yes, she doesn’t choose her husband based on money or status but out of pure love. And surprisingly, the fisherwoman’s Wicker husband understands affection and companionship to every bit; even more than the flesh-and-blood ones.
As it turns out, someone who has never learned about the fairy-tale obsessions and societal pressures to be the perfect husband and wife can also be the perfect husband.

Wicker’s Unusual Love Story Challenges Traditional Marriage
In the ‘Wicker’ movie, Olivia Colman is shown as a lonely yet independent woman who lives on the outskirts of the village, away from the judgemental people, and earns her own living by selling fish. Even though she tries to remain unbothered by the neighborhood, the community constantly keeps measuring her worth by marriage.
But everything changes when a local artisan creates a husband out of wicker for her. Surprisingly, the ‘Wicker’ husband is caring, attentive, and capable of fulfilling his wife’s desires, unlike most village husbands.
Not only does their relationship challenge the village’s concept of marriage, but it also shows how a non-human relationship can survive and overcome what a human relationship cannot. Here lies the whole irony of the movie; a husband made of plant fibers can offer more warmth than a human husband.
When we see the other couples in the village, the contrast becomes even starker. For example, the Bakerwoman and her husband have completely lost physical intimacy, while the Bittlewasher’s wife doesn’t even contribute to sexual encounters. Then we also see other wives whose husbands don’t even give them the bare minimum of respect.
Then comes the most disturbing scene, where during a wedding ritual, a groom is asked to fasten a heavy metal collar around his bride’s neck as a symbol of lifelong duty. Nobody seems to care for the bride, who’s struggling to breathe because of it.
In contrast, the fisherwoman’s husband, aka Alexander Skarsgård, refuses to follow any such rituals. Neither does he consider his wife his own property, nor does he expect her to surrender her independence.
