The Cat in the Hat is now hoping for strong, positive word of mouth to save the box-office run. It has opened with poor numbers at the North American box office, already raising concerns. Compared to the other Dr. Seuss adaptations, it is nowhere near their opening-day grosses; even the 2003 live-action version earned more than this latest release. Keep scrolling for the deets.

The film has received mixed reviews from critics, while audiences have enjoyed it, giving it a solid 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics suggest that while the movie has some charm in its eagerness to please, the film could have benefited from lower stakes and a less frantic pace. The movie still has a chance to turn its fate around, and for that, it will need people’s help.

The Cat in the Hat’s opening day collection in North America

According to the Box Office Mojo data, The Cat in the Hat landed at #2 in the box office rankings in North America. The film collected just $6 million on its Friday opening day at the North American box office. Compared to other animations, it is much lower than expected. The film has, however, earned more than the opening-day grosses of Wildwood ($4.4 million) and Forgotten Island ($4.4 million).

But it is far less than the previous Dr. Seuss adaptations, including the 2003 live-action adaptation of the same name. For the record, 2003’s The Cat in the Hat collected $11.2 million on its opening day. Meanwhile, The Grinch collected $18.6 million, and The Lorax raked in $17.5 million on their opening days. The 2026 animation is far behind them, which is concerning.

Opening weekend projection

The movie is currently eyeing an opening weekend of $18 million to $21 million at the North American box office. With a reported budget of $92 million, excluding marketing and promotional costs, the animated feature’s projected debut could prove challenging. A strong theatrical run and positive word of mouth will be crucial for the film to build momentum beyond its debut weekend.

What is the film about?

The film follows the Cat in the Hat as he embarks on an all-new epic adventure filled with mischief, magic, and mayhem, introducing audiences to a side of the iconic character they have never seen before. The Cat in the Hat was released on November 6.
