As the year 2011 comes to an end, Koimoi.com brings you a series of articles that profile the best and worst of Bollywood movies, stars and box-office results from the year gone by. Let’s start with the movie posters – most talked about, most awaited and probably the most impactful.
Salman Khan in READY
All that Salman Khan needs to do is wink and his fans go into a mad frenzy. Or at least that is how it all played out when the first look posters of Ready were released to the public in April this year. The box-office performance of the Anees Bazmee film proved beyond doubt that a smiling Salman Khan, a simple poster and a hit song is all it takes to break box-office records!
Salman Khan in BODYGUARD
And then, a few months later, Salman Khan decided to flex his muscles (with a coy Kareena Kapoor imitating him just around the corner), and you had another record-breaking film’s poster. Of course, the country went gaga over Salman’s class Bodyguard act, and, of course, the film broke all previous records. Simplicity, then, must be the key…
Ajay Devgan in SINGHAM
When a lion roars, you now think of Ajay Devgan‘s superb cop act from Singham. The highlights of the poster — Devgan’s well-sculpted torso, the tattoo on his chest and the lion emblem in the background — told the audience what the film was all about. No doubt, they lined up in huge numbers, enough to make the film cross the coveted Rs. 100 crore net mark at the box-office.
Shah Rukh Khan in RA.ONE
A blue-eyed Shah Rukh Khan looked into the horizon as he crackled with electricity as the hero, G.One. There was another poster of Ra.One in which Shah Rukh carried a limp (but sexy!) Kareena Kapoor in his arms. No doubt that Ra.One finally got SRK entry into the much coveted Rs. 100 crore club!
Shah Rukh Khan in DON 2
Shah Rukh Khan will give a dashing end to 2011 as the suave Don. While unmasking himself (?!), Shah Rukh is definitely going to be a treat to watch as he changes from the stubbled criminal in an orange jumpsuit, to the swashbuckling Don in Don 2.
Katrina Kaif in MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN
Blushing brides are a thing of the past. Katrina Kaif is the sexy, bindaas, new-age dulhan who has her suitors dancing to her tunes. She’s got Imran Khan and Ali Zafar falling for her (literally) in the poster of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan.
Hrithik Roshan in ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA
Three amigos were off for the trip of a lifetime and they gave the girls something to look/drool forward to! Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol just looked too super-cool in the poster of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara to be ignored!
Vidya Balan in THE DIRTY PICTURE
The age of being coy is past. Vidya Balan flaunts her sexy curves as Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah get a taste of the delicious hottie in the poster of The Dirty Picture.
Emraan Hashmi in Murder 2
There’s sin, skin and everything that assures you what to get out of this Bhatt film. If Jacqueline Fernandez and Emraan Hashmi made heads turn with in the poster of Muder 2, their film did not disappoint.
Ranbir Kapoor in ROCKSTAR
Unlike the usual cut-pasted/copied/photographed posters, the Rockstar poster was like a whiff of fresh air. Ranbir Kapoor‘s seething rage and his music set fire to the poster which had a hand-painted feel to it.
R. Madhavan in Tanu Weds Manu
Who would have thought of putting R. Mahdavan and Kangana Ranaut together? The mild mannered, calm Madhavan gave a happy smile even as his bride Kangana dozed off on his shoulder. Well, the audience were anything but dozing during Tanu Weds Manu.
Priyanka Chopra in 7 Khoon Maaf
Seven men charm their way into one woman’s life, but whom does she really love? Priyanka Chopra‘s lynx-like eyes, with her mysterious look on the poster of 7 Khoon Maaf would make us forgive her for even for murder.
Imran Khan in Delhi Belly
While most posters want to grab people’s attention with sexy actresses or a lot of skin show, the Delhi Belly poster was exactly the opposite! You had Vir Das, Imran Khan and Kunal Roy Kapoor covered in dust and the cute Imran reduced to a badly-beaten rag. Even with the four-lettered words and potty jokes, DB was a laugh riot all the way!
Shaitan
Rorschach would have been so proud of the Shaitan poster. If you thought ”trippy” when you saw the poster, the movie was no different. Drugs, testosterone-laced chases, shootouts and some very good songs made you sit on the edge of your seat throughout the movie.
So you’ve seen the poster, and you’ve probably seen most of the movies. But which one do you like best? Tell us what you think in the comments section and vote for your favourite poster:
