In our continuing series of guest blog posts, Koimoi.com brings to you the analysis of the Rs. 100 crore club by our reader, who has tried to explain how and which films have entered into this elite club. Read on….
What is the Rs. 100 crore club?
What factors decide if a film should enter the Rs. 100 crore club?
Bollywood’s Rs. 100 crore club, which has became too popular in the recent times, was practically unheard of till five years back. When blockbusters like Welcome, Om Shanti Om, Partner and Taare Zameen Par became instant money spinners, they did not enter the Rs. 100 crore club due to the simple fact that their collections did not cross the Rs. 100 crore threshold.
Rs. 100 Crore Club: Ghajini First Off The Block
The club opened with a blockbuster from our perfectionist actor, Aamir Khan. His Ghajini was the first film to cross the Rs. 100 crore landmark. Now, many of us might feel that the films listed above were better than Ghajini in some respects, but one needs to understand that with time, the audience’s mindset and the scale of revenues coming in from multiplexes have changed. Ghajini grossed Rs. 100 crore in 16 days, which was indeed a landmark at that time.
Rs. 100 Crore Club: Star Power
What factors determine if a film can enter the Rs. 100 crore club? If someone asks you whether Ek Tha Tiger will enter the Rs. 100 crore club, I am sure you wouldn’t even think for a second and say ‘yes’. The reason, of course, is the deadly combination of Eid & Salman Khan. Most of us would agree that the star power is one of the most powerful factors that improves the chances of a film entering into the coveted club. And as far as star power is concerned, the three Khans absolutely rule it. Presence of stars like Salman Khan (who is considered the king of Rs. 100 crore club), Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgan will most likely ensure that a film has very good chances of entering the club.
Rs. 100 Crore Club: Content
The other, and perhaps equally important, factor is the content of the film. A film could be considered to be either a ‘mass’ film or a ‘class’ film. At the moment, most of the movies in the Rs. 100 crore club are mass movies.
Mass movies work big time in single screen theatres and stars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi are considered as big stars of single screen cinemas. Ajay Devgan is a star in 100 crore club whose films did not jump into 100 crore club like the Khans. Both Golmaal 3 and Singham had quality mass content, and thus Singham grossed 100 crore after 36 days of its release.
Since Devgan’s next release after Singham, Rascals, flopped at the box-office it only proves just star power is not enough to enter the 100 crore club. Stars need strong scripts too.
Rs. 100 Crore Club: Who next?
The stars most likely to enter club in 2012 are Akshay Kumar & Hrithik Roshan. Akshay Kumar has much-awaited releases like Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore which are strong contenders, while Hrithik Roshan is riding high after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and his Agneepath is all set to take a great opening after the trailers and Chikni chameli song have been liked by the audiences.
